has anyone used wheel spacers on their 4x4 Dak? i was wanting to bring my stock tires out a little bit (1/4" or so) but i don't know if it is a good idea or not. Are there issues with the brakes or the rear drums?

No, its a really bad Idea..... you're more likely to have a wheel fall off, it throws off your alignment, and further stresses your entire suspension. don't do it.

up to 1/2 inch spacers work fine as long as studs are long enough and lung nuts are tight.

Up to 1/4" will be fine. Longer lugs would be a plus but you can get away with the stock ones. I have been running spacers for a couple years had no problems. Just remember the Dakota front suspension is weak and poor driving skills can create premature wear. Keep an eye on suspension parts if you do this and you should be fine.

Another vote for no-spacers. Add's too much stress to the front end (this coming from a licenced mechanic).

J-Rod,
With all the stress these guys are saying that spacers put on your suspension, it has to be a whole lot less stress than puting on wide rims or 31" tall tires. Lots of unsprung weight hanging out there with those things and I don't hear anyone saying that those are a bad idea.
Go for it - just make sure you have enuf bite for your lugs.

No, rabbit, I agree with you, any changes in suspension or tire size reacts poorly unless thought out and adjusted properly. especially on the new Dakota/ Durango, the upper ball joints are known to fail out prematurely. ( another Mechanic here....

So...you mechanics are saying that all these wheels out there with decreased backspacing that allow the tires to stick farther out, theoretically putting more torque on the suspension components, are going to destroy everyone's front suspension prematurely? I think that you are full of crap. I have had many vehicles including a dakota with wheels that way, and have not ever had any problem whatsoever! To everyone else, just because someone says they are a mechanic 1)doesn't mean that they are 2)sure doesn't mean that they know what they are talking about!

Now before you get all mad and start a flaming war, I wasn't necessarily talking about you guys. I have no way of knowing if those statements are true about you. Just speaking from the many times that I have taken my vehicle to a service shop to have somthing fixed that I just didn't want to take the time to fix and the person that is going to be doing the work doesn't really know jack about my vehicle.

"I don't know sir, I will have to check the service manual for your vehicle"

Great answer Mr. Certified Mechanic!! Why don't you just say "I really don't know how to fix it, I am going to just look at the pictures in this book I have and try to follow the directions"

Instills a lot of confidence in the customer.

You have to remember that mechanics are not strictly familiar with any specific model of vehicle. Many times they won't commit themselves to something until they look at how it's put together and so on. I completely understand that. When I take my vehicle in, I'm not necessarily always paying for their expertise. I'm paying for their time and their tools. In most cases I expect that I could do the same work with a bit of research, but it's not always worth my time.
