We had some pretty heavy rain, so I went to an empty parking lot to engage 4lo (2002 Dakota).

I made a turn because I was curious what oversteer was like, so I knew ahead of time what to expect. Anyways, while in 4lo, it was rather jerky was i turned, and I kept hearing a wierd sound. This was only on the one sharp turn, and wasnt noticed on slight turns.

Kind of curious, on the way home I popped it into 4hi to see if it would do it than. I made sever sharp right hand, with no nosie or jerkiness at all.

So what was the noise, and why didn't I get it in 4hi (At crawling and slow speeds)? Sorry, I'm pretty new to 4x4 vehicles.

No need to appologize for asking questions, that's what the forums are for!

Was your noise a whiney kind? 4lo has a gear reduction (thus "low", lower gear ratio) that engages a set of planetary gears. Normally, these gears are locked together (4hi) and do not turn relative to one another. What you probably heard was the aditional gearing you engaged.

I'm curious why you'd try to get oversteer with all four wheels turning. Oversteer, or fishtailing, is having the ass-end slide out on you while turning. Put the truck in 2wd, turn hard on mud and stomp on the gas. In 4x4, the front wheels will pull you out of the fishtail. And hopefully keep drivers out of a ditch.

Than I must have thought oversteer was something else.

I guess my own definiton for oversteering was to go into a turn, and the steering would go sloppy. So your turning radius would be severely affected. Thinking back now, my own definition makes no sense whatsoever!

There was definatly a whiney noise... along with clunks. I think that was just me whenever I hit the gas.

You were on pavement on 4 low!!! your not suppose to put your truck in 4 hi or low on pavement, it says so in the manual... there is no front differential in 4 hi or low therefor driving in 4 hi or low on pavement will screw up your driveline.. only use it in mud, sand , gravel etc... dont do it again!

What ben means is there is no CENTER differential, so you're only suppost to use it on low-traction areas, such as sand and snow, or in a straight line. I use my 4hi on pavement every once in a while, usually to reverse up a curb without tearing up the grass with the back tires.

The popping noise is never good, so I don't recommend you repeat that part :).
