I just replaced the cat on my 97 for the third time. The dealership was not exactly forthcoming with information as to WHY this keeps happening. So, digging up whatever info I could find on the net... the rattling sound it produces when it goes is the ceramic breaking up which is usually caused by overly high temp. From what I understand - this could be caused by the fuel/oxygen ratio being off - should I get my engine checked? I don't trust the local dodge dealership - they disagreed about it being the cat at all the first time & said they didn't hear the rattle until I accompanied the mechanic on a test drive. For now, it's still covered under emissions warranty, but after that - what? Could the type of fuel be responsible? I sometimes use high octane, but after re-reading the specs I noticed that they recommend 87. Any advice would be appreciated (I'm admittedly mechanically disadvantaged)

Along those lines, do other Dakota owners have hangers near their cats? Seems like a long stretch of pipe and the such on mine to not have a hanger there to hold it steady. Could it be that vibrations are causing this?

Lesley, a friend of mine has had the same problems with CC V6 '97 auto, and after a while he just got a high-flow; it's been fine. I bet the stock ones are just ... cheap.

Zaurusman, I looked under my truck tonight at the car wash... there is one hanger before the cat, 2 after it, but before the muffler.
How expensive would a high-flow be? For now, it's not costing me anything to have the dealership keep replacing it as it's under warranty. I will get it checked out, though, thanks for the advice BlkBird.

don't feel bad i'm on my fourth cat. on my 99 5.2 and i havent even reached 30,000 miles yet. I doubt the answer will come from a dealer, a retard could get a job as a dodge mechanic.
Not that there is anything wrong with that!!!!!

Could all this be attributed to an O2 sensor?
Just a wild guess...

Rascal: Okay, would that measure the fuel/oxygen ratio? I know squat about mechanics, but am learning... I've looked this up on the net & the info I got suggests that my cat is overheating enough to shatter the ceramic, which can be caused by an incorrect fuel & 02 ratio. The dealership isn't open to listening, I had to insist that they take a look at the cat the first time - they wanted to replace my exhaust! I'm going to get it checked out, and you can bet it won't be by the dealership.

Lesley, yes, that is what the sensor not only measures, but helps control. Keep reading, you are doing fine. One of you sensors is located there near the cat. Buy one at Advance or Pep Boys or someplace, (a replacement...seems like they are about $30), and have them replace it when they replace the cat..better still, replace both of them, (there are two on the car). Maybe this will help with the cat destruction. Again, this is hard to diagnose as I am no expert either, but it could be an inexpensive guess at it. Good luck, stay in touch

I have a 93 Dodge Dakota V6 4WD and I have over 170,000 miles on it, the cat just went out. Should I get everything pertaining to the cat replaced, (sensor...etc.) And how can I get a high performance cat?

Wait for the 8yr 80,000 mile(something like that) federally mandated warranty to expire. Unless you don`t want a free one.

I am on my 3rd cat, the dealership tells me it is because I drive short distances 5 miles, etc rapid heat and cool of the cat breaks the waffer away from the housing it then rattles and crumbles.

Which cat is it anyway?

On my 01, 4.7, it has three. Or I should say it had three. Somehow, the third, main cat has mysteriously disappeared.

I looked in one end before it disappeared though, and has has like a fine mesh screen, all the way across the pipe, like a spark arrester.

Driving short distances only will kill the cat. Also, where do you buy your gas? Maybe switch stations. Small independents sometimes put crap in their gas to make it go further. I have personal experience with this destroying a car engine.

Also. Using higher than necessary octane rating is a waste of money and can actually hurt performance.

Oh boy, I just bought a used (35000 mile) SLT with the 4.7 V8. I traded in my 95 Wrangler that went through cats and mufflers annually, not to mention three tail pipes. My mech was perplexed and could'nt really give me an answer as to why. I sure hope I don't have the same problems with this truck. Is the problem with certain engines? Or all Dakota's

short trips are what do it, and thats all cats. You may want to look into some o2 simulators and then just hollow out the cat.

My mech did mention that doing short trips (I live 4 miles from work) that the cat may not get hot enough to work right. However, my wife had an 89 Plymouth Voyager, just got rid of it about 2 years ago with 156000 miles on it. Same muffler, same cat and tail pipe, and only drove short distances too. That had a 3.0 mitsubishi engine in it. Hopefully, I won't have this problem with my Dakota

I guess it could be the amount of unspent fuel too. The 318's are natorious for incomplete detonation, most v8's are from what I read.
