Hi, I've got a '99 V6 that suddenly started a loud high pitched squeal/chirping on my way home from work last night. The squeal/chirp gets faster as I accelerate and slows down when I do. Got it home and parked it in garage only to find I can get the noise just by rocking the truck forward and back. Called my mechanic this morning and he can't get it in for two weeks, any ideas?

p.s. when I say "loud" I mean the kind of noise that could wake the dead.

I to have the sqeeling problem. Mine sqeels when i turn, though.

It's so loud that, to save some imbarassment, I turn up my music as loud as possible hoping the bass drowns it out. :(

If you have a gaurd on your front disc bakes, sometimes a small rock can get caught between the gaurd and the disk and makes a loud squeal, or it could be a u-joint or a cv joint on your drive shaft. What area is the noise coming from?

I haven't jacked it up yet to try and pinpoint the noise, it's so loud that all you can really tell is that it's coming from underneath the truck. Since I can get it just rocking the truck forward and back I am going to jack up one wheel at a time and see if I can't figure it out. If it's a universal or cv joint would I get the noise by spinning the wheels manually or would I have to startup and put it in gear?

If you jack up both back wheels the driveshaft will turn and you should be able to hear it if it is a u-joint or cv. Inspect your cv and u-joints, if they are to the point they are squealing you should be able to see if one is gone. Look for a loose cap or play in the joints.

Thanks for the tip. I jacked it up and the the squealing is only coming from the front left wheel. I think that's a good thing.. it got too dark in the garage for me to keep going so tomorrow I will try pulling the caliper off and see if that has anything to do with it. Definitely something rubbing at one spot when I rotated the wheel. I looked at the dust shield on back of the rotor and didn't see it rubbing anywhere. Pads are fine, nowhere near the wear indicators.

probably the rotary gurter on the non-rotational flex arm. Could have got some muffler steam in it. I would pull the flux capactor and bring it up to 88 mph. to see if time travel is still possible.

That great you found out where it is coming from, I hope it is something simple. Let me know when you find out what it is.

Well it was simple, a chunk of metal or rock fell out when I pulled the caliper off the steering knuckle. After a nice thorough soaking and cleaning with brake cleaner my wheel is rust/dust and squeak free. :D Thanks for the advice everybody.
