Message: No they arent going to be able to tell by hooking it up to a computer that its gone but it would be very hard to hide the fact that they were gone if they were looking underneath. Even if you took them off and hollowed them out it would be difficult to hide the fact that they were out.As far as other effects I know of several older vehicles in my area early 90s various makes and models that run around without any problems.

Message: Depending on the year, you might get a check engine light, which the dealer's computer would show. If it is a late 90's vehicle (I think 97 and later), it is likely equipped with OBD II. OBD II equipped vehicles generally have exhaust gas sensors mounted both upstream and downstream of the catalytic converter to monitor the efficiency of the converter. If the readings go out of whack, which they would with no cats, the check engine light will come on, and the engine computer will then try to compensate for the wild readings by adjusting air/fuel mixtures, etc. This could potentially leave you with an engine that is running wildly lean or rich, either of which will hurt performance.
An earlier vehicle will likely not have any problems.

Or...you hollow out the existing Cat and grab one of Marty's Cat-boxes (KRC Performance). They seem to work well on the OBD-II systems. ;)
BUT...it you really want to stay legal, grab yourself either a stock replacement (dealer and if it's still under warranty) or an aftermarket High-Flow (Miramont, Dynomax, or Random Technology)...make sure that you know which one though: 2-Way, 3-Way, with or without Airtube.

Message: Seems to me that unless the existing cat has a problem, that the gains are not worth replacing it...that's just my opinion. If it does have a problem, and it's under 8 years or 80,000 miles...let the dealer replace it..If it's more than 8 years or 80,000 then it would be your choice.
