Subject: AC low pressure shutoff?
IP: Logged

Message:
Does anyone know if there is a low pressure shutoff switch on the Dakota AC system that keeps the compressor clutch from engaging if the Freon drop below a certain point? My compressor quite working yesterday, and when I checked the power leads going to the clutch, there is no signal being sent. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

They all have this switch. It's on the side of the expansion valve, where the hoses go through the firewall. Unplug it, jumper it with a paper clip, and turn on A/C; it should engage. If not, something else is at fault.

The switch is not on the TXV on the Gen IIIs, as it is CCOT. The switch is on the accumulator. Do as Bob said, but only for testing purposes. If you leave the jumper in it and you are that low on charge you'll fry the compressor.

Checked all the fuses and the relay, no issues there. This system does have a small leak somewhere. The AC people can never find it, but every two years I have to get the AC system charged. BTW, GenIII if you are 0.3 lbs low, they AC system shuts off. The last time this happened I just took it in, and did not check anything out. This time, I actually checked to see if the compressor was running, and of course it is not. Oh well, I will have to get the system charged again. Maybe they can find the leak this time. They did add indicator dye to the freon the last time they charged it.

all you gotta do is park it in a dark place and "shine" a n ultraviolet light around, see any glow from anywhere? that is the leak.

Does anyone know if autoparts stores rent UV lights. They are not something I generally keep around the house, LOL...

If the leak is the evaporator, the UV light might not reveal it except maybe at the condensate drain.

You can also use a black light to check, but you'll need to put it in the dark (close the garage or wait until night).

I saw a kit at Autozone for leak detection on AC systems. Did not look at it too closely, but I think it came with a UV flashlight, goggles, and a dye pack/charge for the system.

Just called the local autozone. The will loan out everything including the light, pump, and gauges. All you have to do is purchase the refrigerant and give them a fully refundable deposit. What I am thinking is borrowing the light to see where the leak is, repairing it, and then taking it up to the local service station to refill the system. They only charge like $27.00 plus the refrigerant. Mostly I want to see where the leak is first, before I let anyone look at it. The last place could not every find leak. That was two years ago, so I am sure it is a small one, but I need to get it fixed nonetheless.

They do sell a cheap UV kit. Has a pen sized UV light and the goggles, etc.
Park it in your garage and turn off the light for best results.

I am really no fan of dye, it is said to be bad on compressor valves, etc. So I've used dye rarely. The UV light I used for commercial AC systems used a full sized 110V UV bulb. It worked even inside a resteraunt when other lighting is on.
