Subject: Trans line check valve IP: Logged
Message: Have you removed it? I have talked to more then one transmission tech who has recommended that the check valve in the cooler line be removed. Apparently, any small piece of debris can block the valve and end up burning up the pump.
Is this yesterday's news? Anyone done it? Only down side is slow starts on cold mornings.

Message: Where is the darn check valve?
I believe it may have contributed to some serious over heating of my trans. I'd like to remove it and see the difference it makes (if any).

Message: Once again, instead of fixing the problem, the eggheads go for a bandaid. The checkball is a tranny Chernobyl waiting to happen. The valve is located in the tranny cooler (pressure) outlet, and will have an arrow on the hose indicating the direction of flow (usually with a flare fitting on one end of the hose, while the other end is threaded). The checkball valves can, and do, become clogged. The intention of the valve is to keep fluid from draining out of the torque converter while shut down. This way, you don't have a cold start with an empty converter, stick it in drive, and nothing happens for a couple seconds. Install a valve body kit from TransGo/Fairbanks/Superior, and it'll do the same thing while removing the risk of killing the tranny.

Message: The check valve is in the crimped end of the hose at the connection to the hard line of the tranny cooler just under the cooling fan (at least under my Grand Cherokee). Wayne at APS suggested that I remove it. I did this by disconnecting the hose from the radiator and at the hard line, it is about 8"-10" long. I used a long rod (rifle cleaning rod) and pushed it out the end. It is nothing more than a rubber ball and spring with a small sheet metal retainer holding it in. It came out pretty easily but it took a little while to dig out the bent up sheet metal retainer. I can not tell any difference in operation, even when cold.

Message: Chrysler transmissions do not run the front pump in park. Yes, the check ball is there to keep the torque converter from bleeding down. Once you remove the check ball all you need to do on cold starts is put the vehicle in neutral for a short period of thime prior to putting it in drive. Neutral does run the front pump. I had a long discussion with a GM transmission expert doing a training on the allison down in Atlanta. He stated that the chrysler transmissions were basically good and that the check ball is definate cause of alot of failures. He also stated that in all of his 30 years of dealing with automatic transmissions that the allison is hands down the best he has ever seen.

Message: Allison is the best. The World tranny is the best the big truck market has ever seen. Impossible to burn up.
Where is the check valve again? Can it be pulled with needle nose pliers?
