Message: The imports announced power and torque ratings for their 2005 midsize trucks. This will most definitely make things more interesting in the midsize truck segment.
2005 Nissan Frontier V6:
Horsepower: 265
Torque: 284
2005 Toyota Tacoma V6:
Horsepower: 245
Torque: 282

Message: I sure hope so Joe. I'd really like a dodge to be my new truck and I need something with go and tow if you know what I mean. They'd better pick up the pace. I mean engines are getting more powerful every year and I'd hate to see a HO v8 get out gunned by a naturally aspired v6. My wife's car has 234 HP and 240 tq. That's way more than my v6 Dak! A car shouldn't normally have more power than a truck. What's the point?
Frosty.

Message: Actually, a lot of cars are going to have more power than a truck. Difference is where the power is made and how much torque is produced. Most of these high horsepower car engines are not good on torque.

Message: for the most part car engines (especially imports) rev really high which is how they make as much HP as they do, they trade this off with a lack of torque. trucks usually make lots of torque at lower RPM making them more suited for towing and hauling.
P.S.:you maybe thinking that engines made by the same manufacturer with the same displacement are alike but they are not. truck engines are built to produce more torque than their car counterpart.

Message: Making more HP is fine...that's not so bad but when a car makes more torque??? I mean the v6 mags only make 225 ft/lbs of torque. Pretty wimpy nowadays. I can barely haul my camping gear let alone a trailer. heheh, the truck without the canopy weighs over 5100 lbs. I just don't know what the engineers were thinking.

Message: Those import guys seem to really flash their "peak" HP numbers but a lot of the time it is only in a little powerband and usually way up in the RPM's, useless for towing like our V8's do right off of idle.
Throw a tow strap between a V6 Frontier and a Dakota and see what happens.
My friend has a 3.3L Frontier and saw they were upping the power next year. Now he wants a new one some day. But I know that V6 wont touch the V8 in the real world. I think his current 3.3L has 190 or so HP. Doesn't sound much less than a 230HP V8 but there is a BIG difference.
That new V6 is not going to pull 2 to 3 quads on a trailer 80MPH up big hills like my Dak does.

Message: Check out the post the guy gave. The Frontier calls out a 6700 lb tow capacity. Not shaby.
