Subject: 4x4Dak or 4x4 ATV ?? IP: Logged
Message:
I am in the market for a 4x4. I currently have a two wheel drive
98' SC 6-cyl. and a two wheel drive ATV.
Which will be more fun, a 4x4 Dak or a 4x4 ATV ??
And where can I test drive a 4x4 ATV ??

If you want to do some serious 4-wheelin, then go for the ATV. But you could also do what I did...
I have a 4x4 QC 4.7L that I use to haul around my quad. My quad isn't 4WD, but it can go anywhere the 4WD quads can go, plus it can do the triple jumps as well.
I own a TRX250R Honda, the predecessor to the new TRX450R. It's highly modified and a blast to ride. Now repairing a Dakota 4x4 will always be more expensive than repairing a quad, so you might consider that in your decision. Also remember that a 4x4 quad is specifically designed for off-road use, while the Dakota has to compromise between good off-road and on-road characteristics. So, in effect, you don't get the best of both worlds with a 4x4 truck, you get a compromise.
Anyway, that's my $.02.
Good luck on your decision. And if you want to check out some pics of my quad, go here...

Message: I spent years of time and money trucking around offroad and then 2 years ago I bought a DR350 dirtbike. The truck is clean, I have WAY more fun, and things don't break as often or cost as much :-) Plus you can go all out like mad and it feels great.
By all means, think about keeping the truck and using it to get you near the action for your ATV or dirtbike riding.
As an aside, check around with the locals to see what the areas for riding are like. Near me the ATV's are in a constant state of worry because they arent legal ANYWHERE. I scoot on past the cops and rangers with my street-legal dirtbike and smile.
Oh, and you only think a 2wd quad can do anything the 4x4 quad can until you really ride a 4x4 quad! I ride one up at my buddy's cabin and it can do things that my old 2wd quads could never dream of. I'm talking feet of snow and buried mud, straight up the side of a rocky wet mountain... amazing. I flip it in and out of 4wd to see the difference and it is surprising. Having taken 2wd quads through a lot of crap, I used to think they could do it all too; nope.
