Subject: Polisher? random orbit variable speed...
IP: Logged

Message:
I'm ready to buy an electric friend to help get rid of my paint problems. (caused by simple neglect for the past 5 years in a very dry hot desert environment.)

"everyone" says the Porter Cable 7424 is the best.
"everyone else" has different opinions, of course.

So, I have tried to do some research on the net about all this car detailing stuff before I decide on a polisher.
Here's what I came up with, that will fit my current budget and seems to be a decent course of action (also, it was suggested by meguiars website):
(will probably just stick to meguiars to keep it simple)
1. Wash with Meguiars Deep Crystal Car Wash.
2. Use M's Deep Crystal System Paint Cleaner
3. Use M's Deep Crystal System Polish
4. Use M's Deep Crystal System Wax

I was thinking about using their clay bar, but from the descriptions it sounds like the paint cleaner will do a better job on oxidation, which I have a LOT of.

So to apply all this stuff, I am going to spend a little dough on an electric helper. From my research I see 2 distinct types: the Porter Cable power-tool type, and the steering-wheel-on-top-of-a-pad type. The former running around $100-300, and the latter around $10+.

So what's the difference? Obviously the power-tool types look like a better piece of equipment, but the others are really popular too.
i'm thinking the power-tool ones are more powerful(?) and would therefore be better for my oxidation removal. Both types boast that you can't burn the paint with them, as both are random orbital polishers.

So, a quick ebay search brought up the following results with different prices and shapes:
Cheap Power-tool type
Expensive Power-tool type
Midrange Power-tool type
Cheapo steering-wheel type
another Cheap steering-wheel type
Even a Cordless one

So which one, which type, why, why not, whatever?
Thanks!

If your paint is as oxidized as you say a random probaly won't do the job very well unless it is a good powerful. you need a buffer/polisher that can do slow speed for BUFFING and then higher speed for POLISHING, I have a Makita 9227C that can vary from 600 to 3000 rpm, they go for around 150$ www.mytoolstore is the best place for prices I have found, As far as them saying you cant burn the paint, don't beleive everything you hear, You should do it with a buffing pad first and then polish with a foam pad and then a wax,

I purchased the Meguires random orbital buffer which is made by Dewalt I beleive it is. It has 6 settings. I used it to buff out some areas I wet sanded and the brush marks. It does not burn or put buffer marks in your paint. I used a heavy medium and light cutting polish from Meguires and then a high gloss polish to finish it. It worked great! I was very leary about it burning the paint and even trying to it would not. It did a sweet job and I applied Zaino over it because I like that stuff so much.

All of the stuff is under the Professional shop here http://www.meguiars.com/store_meguiars/index_pro.cfm

I saw a trucks show that used it and I thought I would try it out. I bought a whole kit to save some money since I will use all the products in it and saved a little money from buying individually.

Jeff,
I have been using a cheap random orbit W/cord for about 8 years now.
What ever you do dont get a polisher that just turns at high speed. Most people burn the paint, you must be experienced while using one of these.
I can polish then wax my Dak. 4 door in just under 1 hour. My vette, in about 45 min. My wifes Toyota 35- 45min.
All 3 cars stay in the garage so oxidation is not a problem 4 me.
I wax almost every 2 weeks. It's important to polish about every 3 washings to prevent wax build up and to deep clean.
Good luck and most of all have fun.
