Subject: Insulating A/C lines
IP: Logged

Message:
Hey, I've got a 99 SLT 4X4 5.2L and I've heard that insulating the A/C lines and the can will increase AC performance. I have heard conflicting opinions as to whether or not both lines should be insulated. What is the proper way to do this mod? Do I just wrap both lines to the compressor with CoolWrap and the can with stick on insulation or is it more complicated than that. Thanks!

Wrap the smaller of the two lines. The larger is for the refrigerant returning to the compressor, and insulating it has no effect. Don't expect a huge increase in the AC performance though. AC systems are designed to reduce ambiant temperature by a certain percentage, usually around 25%. So if it's 110 outside, you're not going to get anything better than 80 from the AC, regardless of how well insulated it is.

There's been talk on the boards that the compresser used on Dakotas (and Rams) is too small, especially for dark coloured vehicles. If it's a big concern, look up a custom AC shop to see if they can help.

I have to disagree. You want to wrap the suction line, the larger of the two. Insulting any line on the high side isn't going to do squat. GM does this and insulated the accumulator for a reason. You won't see incredible results, but it'll give you a couple of degrees.

Compressor too small? Not so in most cases, these vehicles including the Durango are condensor limited-this is why they added the hybrid electric fan in the ANs and DNs AND seperated the condensor from the radiator in the new Rams (they are now side by side). The Rams were do bad from 94-02 that they would actually cycle on the high discharge cutout at idle-not good for the compressor. The Durango with dual evaps could benefit from a lot of changes-larger rear coil, larger compressor and condensor.

In other more simple words, wrap the COLD lines
only and the "can".

what?

pump (compresser) too small? not bloody likely! the system is rated at 28,000 btu which is enough to cool down an average size house. and the concept that it will only cool down 25% from ambient air is just so much hogwash! 28,000 btu will cool down 28,000 lbs of water 1 degree an hour.since the trucks are dark the absorb heat from direct sunlite and that will heat up the cab, but not enough to over power the system I was in Death Valley 5 weeks ago when it was 114 outside, inside my truck it was a cool 71 degrees much more then the bogus numbers someone else mentioned

yeah, really
