Subject: Softer shocks?

I finally gotmyself a dak! 2000 2wd quadcab with 3.9. Out here in LA the freeway expansion strips will drive you crazy at 60-80mph. I will do a lot of freeway driving with an empty or near empty bed.I have been looking at aftermarket shocks to solve this.

Does anybody have experience with a softer shock to smooth out the ride?

Thanks in advance
Ed

I've heard that the MONROE REFLEX shocks are excellent for the price and come with a lifetime guarantee. I for one haven't tried them since i'm the cheapest guy on earth, but if I were to change the shocks on my '99 i'd be sure to go with these!!

Hope this helps!!!!

And you could check into velvet ride shackles. They're shackles with a urathane bushing that absorbs small bumps that the leafs can't.

I saw a reference to the velvet shackles on another thread earlier today. I will look into those but I am not sure if they are made for dakotas. Sounds like they might be the ticket though.

I just installed Monroe Reflex shocks on my 2000
CC 4x4. Considerable improvement in cornering and
handleing on mountain roads. The bounceing you mention on concrete freeways is actually more
intense. I was bummed.

That's because the stock shocks don't have enough rebound damping for the spring rate of our unloaded trucks. If that's the problem you're trying to address, you want a stiffer shock for more control. Another way to address the issue is to make sure you don't have too much air pressure in your rear tires - keep it to 32 psi, only going higher for towing or carrying a load.

Lead, follow, or get out of the way

I just checked with the Velvet Shackle folks--they only made product for some full-sized trucks, and not the Dakota. Bummer.

I give a vote for the Monroe Reflex shocks. I replaced my OEM with Rancho RS5000 and was sadly disappointed. They were shot after about 3 months.

The Monroe Reflex are great and I agree with what Kowalski said reduce the tire pressure. I run 35 psi in my tires (LT265/75R16 BF Goodrich Land Terrain). The Monroe made a big difference and the reduced tire pressure resolved the rest of the problems I had.
