Message: As far as I know (in MA) this is illegal. I have
a friend that owns a '97 F150 that came this way
from the factory (side exhaust dumping out in
front of the rear wheel), and he was told that
a muffler shop or after market cat-back would
only install a system that dumped out behind the
rear wheels. -Al

Message: I have heard that ,all though the exhaust exiting out before the rear wheels looks cool,it can hurt the finish on the wheel. I don't know how true this is but it may be something ti think about.

Message: For what its worth, a co-worker just bought a 2001 Lightning and it has side exhaust that dumps in front of the rear tire.

Message: I was going to do this to my 2000 V6. It is more difficult than it looks. The frame on a Dak makes this almost impossible without drilling a hole through the frame. I did have a shop look into this possibility but after finding out all that was involved I gave up. Anyone make it work?

Message: I think the general area of concern for the front of the tire exiting exhaust is the actual exhaust gases re-entering the vehicle's cab at idle (either from side vent windows or rear windows in the QC). It does appear, though, that FORD is using this cool-looking feature (ok, i'll admit it) on their trucks. -Al

Message: I have a single 3.5" exhaust from the cat back that dumps out in front of the rear tire. No muffler, just a cat. If you were to have a cat and muffler, I don't think you would be able to get a good bend to have the exhaust come out the side. I had a custom shop bend & weld mine for $100.00 Not bad. The only one, you may wanna check is by Gibson... I know they have one for the Ram, but not sure about the Dakota. Oh yeah, talk about being loud!!!!!!!!!!!

Message: The problem with the dakota's isn't the fact that you can't do it...It's the fact that you have to move the gas tank on the drivers side in order to dump duals out both sides to be semetrical. If your planning on dumping them both out in front of the tires then you might want to look into buying a fuel cell to put into your truck bed or in the original position of the old one but closer up to avoid the pipe....I did it on my 5.2 with a Jegs 12gal. racing fuel cell and a pair of flowmaster original flows mufflers tipped off with vibrante one into two tips....wicked sound...everyone looks. Just be careful of cops and "excessive noise" tickets..
