Subject: Does anybody have subs in their club cab IP: Logged
Message: I'm in the works of redoing my stereo system, by adding 2-10" subs in the rear of my club cab. I had 2-6x9's under the rear bench, which was ok but I must have more bass. I have 2-10" Oz Audio subs in the truck right now in temp boxes. I'm in the process of designing a box to go under the rear bench so no one will see it, just like the MTX enclosure.
I could go and buy the MTX enclosure, but I rather build it myself and save my money. Does anyone have pics of installs in their Dakota?, so I can get some ideas. I want the stealth look.
Thanks in Advance
Anthony

Personally, I would spend the cash and get the unloaded box for about $175 (if you look hard enough). For the amount of time you will spend building and cost of materials, not to mention the "stock look" that the MTX gives you as well as taking full advantage of all the space, I really don't think you are gonna come out much ahead by building it yourself.
That is if you plan to stay under the seats and not build out over them.

I have the Thunderform, but I made a mistake when I bought it WITH the subs. I shoulda done my homework first... I'm really not satisfied with their performance. I'm looking into replacing them with either JBL "GT" series (good price/good specs) or Infinity "Kappa" series (more $$/GREAT specs).
I know that I'll never achieve competition-level performance with this box, cuz it's a sealed enclosure - NOT ported, but after living with a pair of 8" Bazookas in my last truck, I was expecting more from two 10's. I do, however, love the way that the enclosure looks, and conceals, and I'm sure that after I upgrade the drivers, I'll feel much more from it.
P.S.
Stay away from Infinity amps. The 5-channel that I bought is a piece 'o crap. Repaired once already, and it smoked again. When I took it in for repair, I noticed a PILE of repair orders for the same amps.

Message: I have 4 12's in my club cab you can see a pic of them @ http:/www.geocities.com/dropt_98_dakota/more3.html I have a couple of other friend with dak C.C's and will try and get a pic of them, one of them is a pretty sweet install. He moved the widest back bottom seat cushion to the middle of the truck then put 1 sub on each side of the seat, it looks pretty slick I have seen a couple of trucks like this.

Message: Hey Dropt98dakota,
I have this setup already with the widest seat cushion in the middle with one sub on either side facing each other. It performs great, but I don't want people to be able to see what I have.
Thanks again

Message: ok... broeheem, um, sealed boxes are better than ported... ported may be a bit louder, but only in a narrow range of frequency, that which the ports are tuned to. a sealed box will give you tighter sound, flatter response, etc. you'll also be able to give the subs more power, getting better dynamics and cleaner sound. mm, bass....

Message: Has anybody here bought the vehicle specific
enclosure from JL Audio for their CC? It's
called Stealthbox. It uses one sub and takes
up less room than the MTX. But, I don't know
how it performs.

Message: jLo...
Most people that I've talked to stand by their opinion that a ported enclosure will provide more bass than a sealed box, BUT...
You may be right : more bass at a specific frequency - i.e; that "booming" so popular/neccessary for rap/hip-hop. Most of whom I've talked to listen exclusively to this type of music.
I'm gonna try upgrading my MTX's and replacing my 5-ch amp with seperate amps for the main speakers and the subs, and see if that makes the difference that I hope to achieve.
Thanks for your input!

Message: Broheem, as a person who mostly listens to "rap/hip-hop", I partially disagree with your statement...
Although many people use ported boxes to get a certain "sound", if you are like me and you run alot of power, then we would go sealed all the way...
I haven't had a ported box in years (I'm talkin' about 10 years as a matter of fact.) Back then, I had a puny 120 Watt Alpine amp pushin' 2 15" Lanzar woofers..in the back of a '89 Ford Probe. Since the box was ported it worked pretty good as far as sound goes (but it didn't produce alot of pressure (SPLs) like my current setup does...)
However as life got better and I got better amps (My current "bass amp" in my '96 T'Bird is rated at 375 Watts with my "mids and highs" amp pushing another 250 Watts) I started using sealed boxes to accomodate the extra power. But what most people don't realize is that power does not kill speakers, distortion does, and people using underpowered amps to push speakers in ported boxes can do alot of damage if they aren't careful...
Now the one thing that REALLY mattered in all of the cabinets I have had was "airspace". Having enough airspace for the speaker is essential to having a good bass sound (hence the "boominess"). With a smaller "sealed" boxes, there are speakers out there that perform like champs in smaller spaces with adequate power (back in the day.. Kickers were known for this).
Personally, I now use a 6th order enclosure (a sealed box playing into my trunk which acts as another enclosure) to produce the necessary bass in my ride. The cabinet is approximately 5 cubic feet for for 2 12" woofers... and yes it is "boomy" to an extent. However the box is not ported, it is sealed.
So I guess what I am saying is... since ported boxes are generally larger than their sealed counterparts, this is what usually gives you the "boomy" sound. Add to that the fact that you don't need as much power to push a ported box to get said sound and now you see why many of the "hip-hop/rap" set use this kind of setup... but I just wanted to let you know that this wasn't the only way to accomplish this.
BTW, you are correct in that it is better to go with separate amps for mids/highs vs bass... Even though there are plenty of good amps out there, the separation here really does make a difference. Just make sure that you use a good wiring/fuse system (like 8 guage or lower with a 60 + amp fuse and a power distribution block) and ground everything properly. (Personally, I got tired of poppin' 60 amp fuses when I really had it crankin' so I put in a 100 amp circuit breaker instead).
