 Subject: Dual or single exhaust? Everyone help

OK, now I'm starting to second guess myself. I thought I wanted the 3" single. Now I call a shop and the guy says that a 2.5" dual (one muffler with two 2.5" outlets) will make more power. On top of that, he said a single 3" won't produce enough back pressure and my truck will run like crap. Is he full of crap? I need as much input as possible. I want to get my exhaust done, but I have a budget and I want to make sure I make the right choice. I would appreciate a lot of input on this. Also, I live in CO. I don't know if the elevation is a factor.

Regardless of what you do, Do not buy Magnaflow. I was all excited one day after hearing a co-workers dak with a straight-thru muffler(I can't remember the Brand). I went right to the muffler place and got one, The guy there said Magnaflow was the best... with the best sound. I started it, It sounded ok at idle but it was soooo loud went I got moving. The truck ran terrible, sounded terrible, and people kept asking me what was wrong with my exhaust. I took it off and put the stock back on. I want to try the Gibson cat-back on my 3.9 but am terrified to do so. I go on speedtweaks.net almost everyday and ponder buying it. I have to hear it first, Anyone got a few 3.9 soundclips?

I have the Stainless single side Gibson. I guess it's a matter of opinion. Like CR250canada, Gibson is OK at idle. Louder than stock, but I got used to that. Winding throught the gears she does get loud. I like it. At cruising, I hear a hum from the back. Not annoying at all. I'm quite satisfied with the gibson system.
Manuel, According the www.gibsonperformance.com site, they recommend their sngle side sweep catback as their most power producing system. I guess other brands may differ.
Sorry, no sound clips.

Thanks Harvey. I saw that website before. I've decided that I'm not going with the shop that said a single 3" would make my truck run like crap. After lots of surfing and calling, I've decided that a single 3" is the best. Now I just need to look around for the best price on Gibson. Either that or Flowmaster 50 series. I like 'em loud. Thanks again.

I bought my Flowmaster 50 series cat back from Summit for $197. I love it. Sounds great.

A single pipe system will work much more efficiently than a dual unless you're pushing 400+HP...then a dual with crossover will work much better.

Single will make the most power and torque spliting in may look cooler in your opinion but you lose because you a creating turbulance that doesnt need to be there. The dodges use a cross over system from the headers or manifold into a y-pipe. So they took two and went to one. Spliting it again causes the same horse power reductions as it causes up front. If you want 2 pipes go with headers that go out the back and dont cross over then put 2 individual exhaust systems. This makes the most power.

Thanks very much for the input. I've decided on the Flowmaster force II cat back that comes with a 50 series SUV muffler. What is involved in installing this? Can I do it with simple hand tools? I was told by Flowmaster that the stock exhaust would have to be cut off and that a hacksaw or sawzall would work just fine. Any tips?

Flowmaster in my opinion is the highest quality and best sounding. A tip would be to have the flowmaster fully assembled and laid out under the truck before you touch the truck. Make sure you understand how you are going to do it befor you do it. After you clamp on the flowmaster go and get it tig welded and get rid of the clamp. looks cooler and will not rust. ANd is stronger.

Well guys, I did it. I ordered my Flowmaster Force II exhaust tonight. Should get it in a week. Thanks for all the input. This site has been a great help to me in making my decision. Cyber, thanks for the link. I'm sure I'll need it.

I just installed a 2.5 Gibson Catback Dual system with 3" Chrome Tips. It sounds great and even gained some HP and MPG. When I get a chance I will post some sound files and pics. Much more impressed with the Gibson over the Flowmaster. Sounds much better on this truck then it did on my older truck that I had Heidman Headers, cool air intake, performance cat, 2 flowmaster mufflers.
