Hello, I saw a new dakota drive by in a parking lot and he had 2 aftermarket lights behind his grill, and it looked awesome. However I became interested in doing it myself on my 99 dakota 4x4, but i dont see how he did it at all... for one the grill opens with the hood (duh) so i bet he connected the lights to the inside of his bumper.. but theres like only 2 inches of clearence from the radiator to the bumber... So my question is if anyone else has done this, and if not but know how.. hit me up, because i'd love to find out how to do this and make it work. thanks fellas.. Ive seen this done a bunch of times on otehr trucks.. but the dakotas 97 and up seemed unlikely till i daw that one guy...

ps: does the radiator get hot and could possible melt the wires or what not?

I would have to say it'd be hard to do. I have seen some of the newer body style rams have them behind the grill, but it looks like they have a foot between the grill and radiator. I don't see how it could be done on a dakota. I guess very carefully.

I did that with my old F150 ('87), put 3 marker lights behind the grill to light up the radiator. I installed two under the rad support, and one behind the logo. With a vehicle that the grill lifts, it's just a matter of running the wires along the hood hinge and down to the front of the rig. Neon tubes can be installed, less than 1" clearance needed. Be creative!

doesn't sound hard at all. Just route the wiring back to the pivot area of the hood. Your pos and ground wiring is a cake walk since the battery is in the same compartment. You can activate them by relay to work with your headlights and not even run a switch to the cabin if you don't want to. The hardest part will be fabbing some mounts, but I doubt that'll really be hard either.
Maybe I'll have to do it and take some pix ;-)

wal sounds good.... the wiring isnt my problem.. ive done it lots of times... its just that i want to put like aftermarket driving lights, not neons or anything.. my only dilema is the space between the grill/bumper and the radiator to fit lets say 2.5 inch deep lights and a spot to mount them securly.. any ideas?

i did somthing simalar on the zr2 i had before my dak.i put the lights where i wanted with tape(sturdy)then fiberglassed a mount for them right to the grill.when it dries you can lose the tape and they stay where you wanted.just make sure you fiberglass the foglight mount and not the light like i did, makes easier for any repairs to the light later if need be.(yes i learned the hard way)my two cents

As I recall, there is a support bar running in that grill somewhere. You could attach your custom bracket to it for strength.

I have some lights on order. Lemme find some time and see what I come up with :-)
