What's the best instruction book for the DIY guy with a 97 4WD 239 V6 Dakota?

Get the factory manual. I've heard that Chilton's and Hayes are good, but I've also heard stories that they tend to leave out some details that a factory manual doesn't. If you're going to be serious about DIY work, go to the source so you can do the job with good info.

If you go to the Haynes website you could order one there. I would recomend getting one if you are going to do repairs yourself. The manual that comes with the truck(at least mine) is no good for doing repairs on your truck. I got my book from my local parts shop for 18.00$ saved me more than once.

Buz,

I believe that "JustRed" is referring to the Factory Service Manual (FSM). It's the one that the shops use, and are very detailed. Also, they're specific to the year of your truck. They are a bit expensive ($80.00 to $100.00 and up) but worth it.
If you're not in a hurry, you can try searching eBay. They're listed there every now and then. It took me a couple months, but I just purchased one on eBay for $40.00.
BTW, you can also find the Haynes manuals on eBay (they're listed there all the time for about $15.00)

If you're looking to buy a FSM now, I've found a couple places online...I'm sure that there are others though.
