Subject: A/C pulley removal IP: Logged
Message: I have a 1993 V6 3.9 Dakota with an A/C pulley that has a bad bearing in it. I have put a short belt on it for now. If i spin it by hand it roars due to the bad bearing. When I had the belt on the A/C was quiet when the clutch on the compressor was engaged, but when it dis-engaged it started roaring. So all I want to do is get the pulley off so that I can replace the bearing in the clutch. It's a Standen (spP compressor

See page 21. This involves tools you probably don't have, don't ruin anything trying to McGyver it. If you do manage to get the rotor off, put the armature plate back on loosely by itself. Try to turn the compressor over by hand. It should turn freely without any catches.

Message: Lab Rat's right. If you don't have the tools, this is another case where it makes sense to go to a garage that does, pay a mechanic (directly, cash talks!) to swap on the new bearings or clutch assembly (recommended). You're going to have to bring it back in anyway to get the system evacuated and recharged.

Message: Just more info...the 3.9, 5.2 and 5.9 Magnums can all ahve the clutch R&R'd without removing the compressor and recovering the charge. It's a little cumbersome but saves the money and time for dealing with the refrigerant in the system.

Message: Thanks I had some guy tell me that I would have to replace the A/C compressor. The hard part now is finding someone with the tools in the Roswell Georgia area that will take cash to pull the plates off. I see no need to evacuate the system, unless I'm missing something

Message: This ended up being easy ..
1 remove the nut
2 remove the c clip
3 use a steering wheel puller to remove the plate
4 use a gear puller to pull the bearing and pulley off
5 remove the c clip and push the bearing out
I can't find this bearing anywhere. Dodge doesn't have it , or napa, or dixie bearings. It has a 2.165 OD and 1.380 ID any ideas? I've ordered 2 from Advanced Auto parts and they were the wrong size.

Message: If you do an internet search, you should find one.
I found a good bearing site, but it is on my other computer. The place was in Calif.

Message: And you will need to convert inches to mm, which for yours is 35x55.
And you need the thickness too.

Message: I had one my friends replace the assembly clutch in his V6 cuz it was screaming like a little bitch... for about 200-300 bucks. Better than $700 for the new compressor or more. Mine is doing the same thing and I'm getting the assembly clutch replaced soon! Hopefully...

Message: If you could get me that site I'd appreciate if very much. I didn't bother to convert it ..LOL all my mike's are inches. I've had little luck finding it. I took the bearing apart as much as I could and re-greased it. It works okay but as you can guess it still makes way too much noise!
Thanks .. K

You can give a man a fish and feed him for a day.
Or you can teach a man to fish and feed him for a lifetime.
I gave you the dimensions, now go online and search for yourself.

Message: Kdiver:
What's the part number of the pulley bearing? Also what model is your Sanden compressor? My '97 V6 has a screaming bearing too and I've also looked high and low on the internet.
In spite of what zzark says, the point of dodgedakotas.com is to help fellow Dakota owners. I think we all have the ability to find things on the internet, but who wants to spend hours upon hours when it can be avoided.
