Subject: Should the check engine light go out?
IP: Logged

Message:
I just had my 2001 Dakota into the dealer for the check engine light and they determined it was for the gas cap having a bad seal. I also had checked the code myself before taking it in and saw it show the say. They put a new cap on it but didn't reset the light? I checked the code myself and its the same one still.

Should I expect the light to go out on it's own after a few days? How long should I wait before deciding something else must be going on? Is there a way to force it to reset? If so, is it a bad idea to force it?

It should have went out immediately. You could disconnect the battery to reset it, or take it back to the dealer and make them reset it.

It takes a few cycles to go off on its own. Mine took a few days to go off. same problem.

I did the battery thing and it went out. Granted, my radio is completely reset but thats easy enough to fix. I just want to see that it does come back on right away!
