Subject: Tranny Problems.. IP: Logged
Message: A question for you gear heads;
I just bought a '91 Dakota, 3.9 auto, 4x4, 200,000 kms. Catch is there's a transmission problem. Here goes: Put 'er in drive, and it takes a LOT of slip to get up to speed. It feels like it's stuck in second gear, because I go all the way up to 80 kph (50 mph) without the tranny shifting before the OD kicks in. It drives just fine from about 60 kph up.
If I put the vehicle in 1'st manually, the truck won't move at all. If I downshift from 2 to 1 while driving (very slowly, to test) the truck came to a DEAD stop instantly. This says to me that first gear, somehow, is seized.
I know the previous owner overheated the transmission somehow. I dropped the pan and found a fair amout of non-metalic filings in the bottom. The magnet did not have much on it. Changing the fluid and filter & adjusting the low/reverse band reduced the major slipping I had before, but it's still not right.
I'm a licenced mechanic, but have very little experience with automatics other than trade school. If need be, I'll be pulling the tranny out myself. Yeah, transfer case and all :-P
If anyone can help, or need more info, please post up.
Thanks,
- Noltz.

Message: Sounds like you are on the right track. Remove it rebuild it, New Bands and Clutches, and drive it till the wheels fall off.

Do you, or anyone, know where I can get a powerflow chart for the valve body? It's a 727 transmission, not the 999. I'm still searching, but if someone knows a secret corner of the web that has 'em, please let me know!

Message: Pulled the tranny on Friday, and gutted it yesterday. Automatics aren't THAT bad, but there sure are a lot of parts! Front clutch pack was seized together (no material left, at all!), rear is okay but new friction discs are going in anyway. The low/reverse band was shot too, which left some scoring on the hub. I dismantled the hub and put it on my brake drum lathe, with the bit turned around. .005" later, smooth as glass. Still have to dig the planetarys out, make sure they're okay, but I think I found the problem.
Oh yeah, the damn thing is a A500, not the 727 tranny. Anyone know where I can get a valve body diagram for it? Just don't want to put it back together wrong :) ...
