Subject: Compressor stopped in 97 Town 'n Country IP: Logged
Message: My '97 Town and Country van compressor has blown a fuse and does not work. I replaced the 15A fuse and the compressor clutch will still not kick in. How do you troubleshoot this? It was not blowing real cold when it happenned, and maybe the low freon switch needs to be bypassed?
Thanks for all the help

Message: You can bypass the switch for a VERY SHORT TIME to verify you are indeed low on refridgerant. Has the system ever been evacuated & recharged? If not, I'd recommend you have it done (about $100) & ask they put a bit of leak detector in it.
Whatever you do, don't bypass the pressure switch and continue to use the AC. You WILL ruin the compressor.

Message: You may also have a shorted clutch on the front
of the compressor. That's what blows the 15 amp
fuse most of the time. If after you replaced the
fuse and nothing happened and the fuse did NOT
blow, read Eric N's answer and try that next. If
bypassing the low freon switch turns your system
on, you are low on freon. If the system *tries*
to start when you jump the low freon switch but
blows the 15 amp fuse, more than likely you're
low on freon plus you have a compressor clutch
problem.
In any case, you're gonna need someone with the
right tools to check/repair your system.

Message: Thanks.
I replaced the fuse and it didn't blow again, and bypassed the switch (also tried disconnecting it) with no response.
Sounds like time for professinal help.
thanks
