I'm kinda in a bind. My 94 Dakota was sold and it's being picked up later this week. It's been sitting for a while and the emergency brake is stuck. The cables are fine (they have slack). How would I release the brake? I assume i'd have to remove the drums... or are there any shortcuts?

Thanks very much!
Jared

are all cables free? check the rear cables. pull on them right where they go into the outer cable near the rear end. they must pull out and go back in. if they do not release i have had some success in releasing them. clamp a pair of vise grips on the inner cable anout 1/2' from where they go into the outer cable. smack the vise grips with a hammer, holding the visegrips at a right angle to the cables. this will some times drive the cables back, releasing the brake. if the cables are all free, remove the wheels and smack the drums with a BFH, while trying to rotate the drums. again, i have had some luck with this. good luck. be patient and keep trying.

I tried that (granted its dark so I might have pulled and pushed on the wrong place) and it didn't seem to budge. I'm going to check again in the morning. Now if it is the drums, just how hard should I hit them. Can they take some abuse? haha.

Hopefully this works... I'm trying to not spend any more on a sold truck.

Thanks for the help!
Jared

This can happen in two places, generally speaking. Either the cables are frozen, or the shoes are stuck to the drums. It's probably the former, as that is mor difficult to fix.

The the shows are stuck to the drums, just move the truck 6 inches, and they will become unstuck. I havn't seen that happen in a long time.

To get the cable unstuck is a little more difficult. Work the e brake pedal a few times, that might help. Get under there and start pushing on the cable with vice grips. Don't forget a good penetrating oil, like PB Blaster (Not WD-40). You can try and take the drums off, but I doubt you'll be successfull. It's worth a try, though.
