Subject: what oil is this? IP: Logged
Message: i started getting my oil changed in my 99 dakota at the dealership and before i used mobile 1 oil, and i forgot to ask what oil type they used but i looked at the oil filter and its black, solid black and i cant tell what type it is... so i was wondering what type of oil brand used black filters? also, they put it 5w 30 in when before i was told to put 10w 40 in.. any problems with that or not? thanks

Black Filter ... ??? No Markings?
5w-30 is the correct oil viscosity.

Message: maybe it's a Mopar filter... I dont remember if those are white or black though.
What engine do you have? if you have a 4.7 (late 99) then 5w-30 is right. in extreme heat, you can use 10W-30 in a 4.7L (per the manual that came with my 00 dak)
If you have the 3.9/5.2, you can use 5W-30, 10W-30, or 10W-40 depending on the ambiant temp...

Message: the "Black" filter is the standard issue "hi-performance" Mopar oil filter, all Mopar filters are rated by Mopar to be hi-performance.
