Subject: Thermostat replacement, then problems
IP: Logged

Message:
Two weeks ago, I replaced the thermostat in my 95 Dak. I think I did a good job. I didn't rush it, or take shortcuts. I did however manage to break the coolant temperature relay switch to the gauge in the cab. I didn't realize I broke it, but as soon as I turned the power on, the hot/cold gauge in the truck went sraight to hot. I hadn't even started the engine yet, LOL!

But I realized what I had done, and the next day I got a new relay switch and installed it. BINGO! The gauge worked perfectly for the past two weeks. Now, tonight, driving home, I noticed the coolant gauge in the cab never moved. It was on cold the whole trip. (long trip, it SHOULD have been between hot and cold)

When I got home, I turned the power on and off several times. All the other gauges moved....oil pressure, battery gauge, etc...The coolant gauge didn't budge an inch. I mean it litteraly never moved, at all. Not even a twitch. I had good cold air all the way home, I even switched to hot air too to see if it working.......oh yea, it was working fine, (backflushed the heater core too when doing the thermostat)
I will of course re-check the relay switch connection in the morning, but any other ideas as to what could be going on?

Bad switch or bad connection one of the two.

I agree with Pongo PLUS if you don't do anything
about it, I would guess your gas mileage will go
down. The computer will keep receiving cold
readings thus causing the engine to run rich. It
will think you just started the engine and it's
still warming up.

By any chance 857pop, is the engine running a
little faster at idle even after its been running
a long time?
