Subject: hi-output alternator IP: Logged
Message: i recently installed a 1500w amp for my subs and a 400w amp on my highs. my system sounds great and slams but sometimes it seems to loose some power and not hit as hard. i thought it was making a bad ground but then i was told it was my alternator winding down. question is, where can i find a hi-output alternator for my 98 v6 dak?
is it better to order online and install or is there any nationwide stores that sell quality alternators for a good price.

Message: did you put a stiffening cap (1 Farad) near the amp? This will help if your play your music with the really loud bass. The cap will actually deliver a whole whack of current when needed and help to relieve the poor altenator job of deliveing all that power.

Message: a lot of people don't like caps because (simplified here) once they hit they then need to recharge at the same time the music is continuing. so if you don't have a strong enough alternator in the first place the cap will not really help.
some say that a stiffening cap together with a good (optima yellow-top) battery can compensate for a weak alternator, but you're still only using a bandaid, as the alternator is the core of the vehicle's charging system. (the cap and battery don't make electricity, they store it)
as for the alternator, you can get them at most auto parts stores, or they can usually order the one you need. you pay alot up front, but when you give them your old alternator they give some money back.
thats my $.02
