I'm trying to figure out which tires I'd eventually be able to fit with a 3" body lift and it seems like there are assorted problems. Some people can fit 33s, but others can't. Why is this? How much backspacing is available on the '97 4x4? I was watching 'Trucks' and he stated that 1" of backspacing was required, but it seems that this wouldn't handle the tire when it was turned to full lock? Also, converting inches to the metric measurement that is on the side is confusing. I thought the 31 was the full height of the tire? Isn't the first number in mm (ex 285) also the same measurement? It doesn't work out when I convert inches to millimeters.
Any help sorting through this would be great!

Backspacing - the linear distance from the inner bead flange of the wheel to the inner flange of the bolt circle. I think it's around 3.5" to 4.0" on the DAKS, but I don't know for sure.

285/75R16 - the first number (285) is the 'width' (i believe most are section widths, not tread widths) in mm .... the second number is the aspect ratio expressed as a percentage (.75) - this is the ratio of sidewall height to tire width, therefore the sidewall height for this tire would be 285mm x .75 = ~214mm ... to get the diameter, multiply the sidewall height by two (for obvious reasons), convert to inches and add to the rim diameter ... voila ... keep in mind these are all nominal values and each tire mfr has their own measured values.

Hope this helps.

Try the Tire/Wheel Calculator at this site. It'll do the conversions and show you the differences caused by various tire selections
