Subject: Mods and warranty Q's IP: Logged
Message: I was just curious about how modd can affect the warranty. I currently have two yrs left to pay off and two yrs left on the warranty. Im assuming that most mods wouldn't void the warranty. Am i correct or no? I already have dual exhaust cat back system. But now im looking at three things: air intake, 68 or 70 TB, and HO cams. Whats your guys opinions?
Thanks
-Mike

Message: If you do em , just hope you don't need any warranty work.. They will probably not affect anything , BUT , if the dealer see's them , you
can be SURE he will Nail you to the wall..

Message: Any modification can not void a warranty unless it can be proven that the modified part actually caused the failure. The Magnussen-Moss warranty act protects us consumers from a dealer or warranty company denying a claim because of any mod. Hope that answers your question.
The previous poster doesn't know what he is talking about...

Message: Come on guys. This day and age of big business
out to get your hard earned money, you REALLY
think DaimlerChrysler is any different? Hell no!
They would love to void a warranty in a heart
beat to save money. Read the fine print on their
3/36 warranty. They know their brakes are total
junk that's why only 10k on them. So much for
3/36 bumper to bumper. 7/70 is gotta be a joke.
Have tranny problems? They will do ANYTHING to
patch the problem untill all warranty runs out!
Myself, I never modify anything including a after
market cold intake system unless I'm ready to pay
for any and all repairs myself. Think about it,
Chrysler's thinking > "hum, cold air intake, I bet
that's what caused number six piston to score the
wall. Guess I'll tell the owner he'll have to pay
for the engine replacement"
Best to leave it as is unless you got big bux.

Message: Like 99bludak said, they can't void the warrantee unless they can prove the mod caused the problem, and the burden of proof is on them. Besides, the service dept still gets paid, so it shouldn't be any money out of their pocket.

Message: The burden of proof IS on them (DC), but what do you do when the service dept. says your cold air intake caused your ball joints to go out? Write to DC? Call the police? Get a lawyer? This last one MIGHT work, but YOU have to PAY for the lawyer and it takes time (lots of it).
Read other posts on this site about (for example) sludge in the engine. The service dept. will declare that the oil was never changed and THAT caused the engine to fail. When the owner produced oil receipts and such, the service dept. would simply say that was not enough proof (the owner must have purchased the oil and filters, then poured the oil down the drain). The owner was left with the problem of having to PROVE they changed oil. How the heck do you do that?
The bottom line is many (but not all!) of the DC service dept. seem to go out of their way to attempt to screw you. That includes 'not seeing' problems while the vehicle is under warranty (unable to duplicate problem), poor workmanship, weird advice (synthetic oil is BAD for the Dakota engines), and finding excuses to not do warranty work (cold air intake causes bad ball joints). It seems DC headquarters backs them up. It is sad, but it is true.
So if you make modifications, be prepared to have to fight to get warranty work.

Message: Just in defense of the good DC service departments (there are some, I just haven’t found any), maybe their assumption that a person did NOT ever change the oil or the modification DID cause the failure comes from experience. In my own field, we get some rather stupid people come through our doors. When you get 10 idiots in a row, it gets easy to assume the next one will be just as stupid. You would not believe how often the solution to the customer’s problem is, “Turn the unit on.”
Now if you add a "don't care" attitude to the assumption that the customer is an idiot, then you have real problems (i.e., a typical DC service dept.).

Message: I agree with everything posted above. Bottom line, have FUN
with your truck! Don't be intimidated thinking you will void
some wonderful and perfect service contract you may need in
the future. It's all about the bottom line with businesses and
they will weasel out of anything you let them get out of.

Message: The Magnussen-Moss act is constantly misinterpreted. It was designed to protect the guy who wants to get a cheaper aftermarket oil filter or fuel filter for instance but still be able to get warranty service without the dealer trying to say his fram oil filter caused his engine failure and therefore voided his warranty. IT does not automatically mean that you can modify your truck however you want and expect that you will never get crap over it.
Just because the dealer can't prove conclusively that a mod caused a failure doesn't mean he won't try extra hard and make things more complicated for you. These guys are professionals, they look at engines every day. If they can find a logical connection they most likely will.

Message: My 2 cents.... I asked the dealer, and he said that my aftermarket exhaust and intake kit would not hurt any warranty item. he said it might be a good idea to wait for headers though.
