Message: I just bought a 2001 Dakota Quad Cab SLT. I love it. It's supposed to have keyless entry but the last owner must have lost the remote because the dealer didn't have it. He did have the original window sticker though which says it included Keyless Entry.
So, I am looking to replace it. I see some stuff online where people are selling them (such as eBay) but I don't know how I would program it for my vehicle. Can anyone here tell me for sure how that is done? I don't want to waste my money if I don't have to.

Message: Do you have you owners manual? It is an easy procedure I did it myself when I bought an extra one from ebay also. It is in the manual if you dont have it or it is not in there let me know and I will look it up for you but it is easy!

Message: Actually, if I remember right, you need to have a working remote to program additional ones without the dealers help. Looks like you might be taking it to the dealer for this. I don't think the cost of the remote at the dealer would be too bad, especially since it wouldn't have to be shipped.

Message: The dealer wnats $63.74 for a key plus half hour labor for programming.
For the remotes on the keyless entry, its $34.50 plus about 1/2 hour labor.
Labor for Bill Pierre Dodge in Seattle is $80 an hour.
I'll have to take a look at what the book says regarding programming the remote but I bet you have to have at least one remote to send the signal in the first place. Since I don't, off to the dealer I probably go.

Message: I just checked my manual and yes you have to have 1 that is programmed already. That is the only way to enter programming mode. Then the rest are easy. So go to the dealer pay the cost and then buy 1 or 2 off ebay and save the money on the additional ones. Sorry wish I had better news!

Message: I would get a remote off eBay or somewhere. Since you purchased the truck from the dealer, I would try to talk him out of the labor charge (if you supply the remote). Complain that you spent $$$ for the truck, etc. Tell them you found the remote in the truck and it doesn't work. Maybe they will cover the programming under their warranty?
