Subject: Rear Drum mounting and questions. IP: Logged
Message: I got the rear drum (back right) off to replace some lugs/studs that had been stripped or rusted badly. I got the new lugs/studs in but now I can't seem to get the ^$%#@ drum back on.
Should it be easy to get the drum back on? I have read some posts about adjusting the "adjuster" by going at it from the rear with a flat head screw driver. There is something in the Haynes Manual as well about adjusting this "adjuster" to get the drum OFF.......but doesn't mention using this to get the drum back on the vehicle. Please tell me this easy. What am I missing? Thanks for any help. BTW, 95 dak, 2wheel drive.

Message: If drum is not going back over the shoes
then you may adjust that " adjuster " to allow
it to - it is at the bottom between the shoes.
Are all the studs straight ? Or is a bent one
stopping you ??

Message: If the studs are installed straight, then it's the shoes. The brake shoe adjusters go both ways. If you need to pull the shoes in to get the drums on, lift the stopper on the adjuster star wheel and turn the adjuster back (from the front; you don't have to go through the back access hole to do this). Once you get the drum on, you may need to adjust it tighter (by turning the star adjuster) through the access hole in the back.
Also, if you stepped on the brake pedal whilst the drums were off, that could have expanded the wheel cylinders. You would need to compress them all the way back in if that were the case.

Message: Well I'll be dang!!! That little adjuster sho' does help. Drum slid right on. Was a tad tight but I got it pushed on with my hands, no hammer needed. I'd say it was perfect. Got the wheel back on, backed up and hit the brakes a few times to self adjust, and away I went.
The best part about the whole deal was that I saved $2.79 in lighter fluid I didn't have to use. (hehe)

Message: What us "old timers" are beginning to see is you
younger guys don't know how those brake *shoe*
units work. It's NOT your fault! You guys are
growing up with the disk brake systems. I see
most auto makers don't put the drum (shoe) brakes
on the rears any more.
I grew up replacing shoes. To tell you the truth,
I'm GLAD to see them gone! I just replaced the
rear shoes on my 79 AMC Concord. Glad the job is
finished.
