Took Dak in yesterday for 45K service @ 44,400 mile mark.
Dealer calls says there's a problem in the rear dif the "retaining clips" are broken need to replace the gears... ????
Is this normal for these rear ends?
The reason they looked really hard at the whole powertrain was I could feel a slight "rumble like vibration" through my butt when I was stopped at a red light. Been getting more noticeable the last month (1100 miles).
Anyone have any experience with this problem?
Warranty covered it for the $100 deductible but I'm a little concerned the truck has not been abused, no off-roading/mud swallowing and hasn't pulled anything or been loaded to max weight.

Called DC "Customer Care" this morning wanting to report a quality problem with the rear end and possible safety issue got "You had the foresight to purchase the extend warranty and it got fixed so what's the issue here?".
DC is staffed by dorks!
Moving on to the NHTSA people...

Webtiger, My 03 is at the dealer right now having a whole new housing installed as well as the gears and bearings. This is at 32,000 miles.
I was changing the diff lube and noticed metal pieces on the square magnet at the bottom of housing. Buttoned it up refilled and took it to the dealer. The dealer has not made it real clear but bearing retainer or tracklock clips or something?? broke and wore into housing. The whole thing has to be replaced and it will be 4 or 5 days before they can get the housing. I'm still under bumper to bumper so no deductible but it sucks to have something like that go out after such low miles. BTW I had to have the PCM replaced about a month ago.

I didn't think I was alone with this problem but good for you this happened before 36,000 miles!
I've had a littany of drivetrain work before this was:
38063 miles LR pressure switch ex/warranty $100
34690 miles Slip yoke Tcase front ouput seal and DRIVE SHAFT ex/warranty $100

11707 miles rear output seal original warranty
7529 miles rear pinion seal original warranty
4069 miles rear output seal original warranty

I love the truck and I thank god I got the extended warranty every time I take it for the major warranty service because, as you can see from the list above, there's a drivetrain/transmission related problem nearly every major warranty service period.
If I was going to keep this truck past 5yrs/75,000 miles I'd seriously consider paying the extra $1,360 to bump the extended warranty to 7yrs/100,000 miles but I think I'll be out of it by then.

Subject: Blown Rear End Parts !!!

I have an 02 r/t with 1.7 roller rockers, intake, and catback
exhaust. The truck has 23k on it and i start hearing a clunk
sound when i back up. I found out that I blew one of the
retaining clips in the limited slip clutch. Has any one had any
problems like this so soon. Ironically my dealer had just voided
my warenty over my socalled mods, apparently the mods caused
my computer to fail twice and the second time they voided the
warenty. well anyway any help would be appreciated...

Yep. I believe that's what happened to mine. I had my 4.56 gears installed and while the guy was in there, he noticed that also so he is now replacing them too. I have 26000 on my 2002 R/T. Now that you say it I think I was noticing a clunk in the rearend too when going into reverse. I plan to replace my stock LSD with a locker of some sort soon anyways. Possibly the Detroit locker.

355 miles on new gears major whine has developed back to the dealer again this truck is 1 more drivetrain related problem away from being a lemon under WA state law...!
