Subject: Fuel efficiency, ECU recalibration? IP: Logged
Message: On my 1995 3.9L, I now get 12mpg, city, highway, whatever.
Part of it is the way I drive mixed with the fact that I have an old, beat up engine.
I'm about to get the engine rebuilt, but would there be any advantage to having the ECU recalibrated right now? Would it save me some gas, being part of the problem? Or could I have other issues?
Pedal to the floor doesn't help, I'm sure. I'm building a new daily driver, after I fix up the love of my life (the 3.9L). If I get the thing rebuilt, might fix my problems. Otherwise, probably just outgrown the engine and need something that revvs a little higher.

Message: Cat conv has been replaced, actually.. there was a rattle in it and it was replaced by Dodge about 2 years into the truck's life.
As far as the EGR valve/solenoid, unless it was something Dodge has replaced before I took over ownership of the truck from my folks, I don't believe so.
Could this be the cause?

Message: almost everyone here does.
your cat, due to the fact that it is, by your statements, almost 8 years old is probably clogged. also due to age your O2 sensor, just in front of the cat is probably burned out ( he does not mention this) and if the Exhaust Gas Recurculation valve (EGR) and/or the solinoid that actuates it are clogged with carbon or just plain worn out due to age, that also will cause poor milage. by the way Dodge uses PCMs, NOT ECUs, and re-progamming it WILL NOT give you back the 18 or so mpg you were getting (or at least should have been). If the engine is so old it blows blue smoke, the poor condition of the engine will also cause poor milage.
