Message: Does anybody have any flow numbers on these two filters, and which one do you think is better? I know both use the same 3 layer cotton guaze with oil, so has anybody used the air hog on their dakota yet? I put one on my wife's grand am gt and it seems to pull better.

Message: Not necessarily true...
Some filters achieve more flow my simply making the holes between the fibers of the media (whatever it is foam, paper, cotton, etc.) larger. This will let more dirt in. The deal with oiled cotton gauze is that it flows better than paper, and the oil allows it to catch the same amount or more dirt. Also this allows the filter to be reused and reoiled for a much extended filter life.
That said, anyone have any numbers on the air hog? I found k&n's numbers.

Message: More air does equal more dirt.
Your stock paper filter is 98-99% efficient at filtering out the dirt. K&Ns are about 85-90% efficient at filtering out the dirt. This means that they let 10 times more dirt through. When K&N claims that they filter/hold/catch more dirt, they mean over the life of the filter. If you use it for a longer period of time, then it will catch more dirt.

Message: Look at the test report. This test was done with course dust, which is more like large sand. For a desert racer this is representative. For everyone else the test should be run with AC-fine.
I used to work for a filtration company. We supplied filter systems for heavy duty trucks and a bunch of industrial stuff. We dabbled in automotive. I have seen many tests comparing K&N to paper media. For the on-road environment, K&Ns are about 85-90% efficient. One thing K&N is bettter at than anyone else is marketing.

However...large sand??
A single piece of wire mesh will screen out large sand, and I am pretty sure they filter better than a piece of wire mesh...
Moving on, I just wanted to know if anyone had flow numbers for the Air Hog versus the K&N, this was never a discussion about their filtration capabilities, so if you insist on discussing that, start a new thread

I don't claim to be the smartest one on the list, but when it comes to filters, I know what is going on.
I just want people to know what they are getting with a K&N. 5% more flow and 10 times the dirt.

Message: i went against the crowd and put an airhog on my homebrew intake. i haven't found the flow ratings yet either but the filtration tests are the same as k&n. mine works just fine, definite increase, i wouldn't imagine that the k&n would be any different, but i wouldn't know for a fact since i've never had one. i have had problems with fram in the past, but i think they did alright with this filter. You can probably get the airflow info by e-mailing them.

having it I noticed the filter is rotting on the

Sounds like it's coming into contact with water/moisture a lot...I haven't had any trouble with my K&N filter so far, but mine sits right on top the throttle body.

I know I am going to get blasted for saying this but NO OTHER
airfilter has done for more for my Dodge Cummins Diesel than
the AMSOIL FlowzAir airfilter.
In fact ... Cummins recommends against using a K&N filter
wetted gauze type filter and when asked about using oil wetted
foam they said .... No Problem, just keep an eye on the condition
of the foam.
Why did I us my Diesel Ram as an example ? Because it sucks
lots and lots of air !

P. S. Do you want an "Air Hog" or a "Flowz Air" ?

FAQ
#9. What is the Micron Rating and Filter efficiency of an AirHog™ filter? The High Performance filters are rated at +97% overall efficiency at a nominal 26-28 micron (Course Test Dust Rating).
This is based on the following:
Test Procedure SAE J726, Section 4.4
Rated Test flow based on most common application for model filter being tested.
Filter is oiled between 1 gram/14.7 SQ-IN media to 1 gram/10 SQ-IN media
FRAM® AirHog™ Oil is applied to dirty side of filter.

Keep running the test with larger particles until you can get in the 97% range.
"Traps more dirt", then in really small print "over the life of the filter"
Unless you really just got to have the extra 5 hp, stick with paper media filters.

Message: An observation. All the test results people are posting come from the manufacturer themselves. OF COURSE they're going to say it filters great, etc, etc. Go to an independed air filter tester and ask them. I personally run a Napa Gold paper filter and I don't have any trouble.
