Subject: Code 12 and 41 IP: Logged
Message: I just routinely cycled the key to see if there were any codes, and I got a code 12 (according to Haynes: "standby power memory lost") and a code 41 ("excess charging or no field", I don't remember the exact wording regarding the field).
I realize the code 12 means the battery was momentarily disconnected, but what about the code 41? I assume it has something to do with the alternator.
If anyone can advise, I'd be very appreciative.

Message: Code 41 also can be set with a bad cell in your
battery !
How old is the battery ?
Possible ' dirty ' connections ??

Message: I was thinking the same thing (glad I'm on the right track). I cleaned the battery and reset the terminal clamps etc. last night. The truck definitely starts with more vigor, but as of this morning I'm still getting the code.

Message: I had the the same thing you have for codes as well my battery charge gauge would jump all over the place once in awhile. I would shut the truck off and start it and it would stop jumping around. Then one day my truck would not start so I got a boost and went to the battery shop where I got the battery from and they tested it. Turned out a cell went bad on the battery, so they replaced it and I have had no problems since then. The battery was 4 years old but I was lucky I had a 5 year replacement warranty so it did not cost me anything. Hope this helps

Message: The truck cranks very fast, so do you still think it could be the battery? Is that what the code means by 'charging system excess or lack of field current'? If the battery has a dead cell, the alternator never quits charging (thus the 'charging system excess'). I just don't understand why it would crank so well with a dead cell.

Message: The day my battery went, my truck started up just fine when I went to work. When I went leave nothing the radio would not even work. I have had this trouble before with a battery in a different truck. Not sure how a battery can seem to be perfectly fine one time and then just seem to go all of a sudden. If your battery is old you might want to replace or go to a shop and have it tested before you are stranded someplace.

Message: I think you're right. I haven't been stranded by the battery, but I don't want to either.
You were having the same codes (12, 41), then when you replaced the battery it cleared the codes (or did you check the codes again)? If so, how long did it take for the 41 to disappear?

Message: The code 41 stopped right after I put the new battery in. I also reset my computer at the same time. The code 12 stayed, I think(i have to double check this one) you have run 50 cycles (starting motor up and shuting it off) before the code 12 goes away. I have not run my codes for awhile. I am going to put on a new fuel filter and check my 02 sensor this weekend, I well check for codes and see if the 12 is still there. It should be gone as I replaced my battery almost 3 months ago. I will get back to you.

Message: All codes are gone now. To reset the computer you should disconnect the NEG terminal from the Battery, turn (and hold) the Key in the START position for 15-20 seconds, release the key and reconnect the battery.

Message: OK, I know this post is about a year old but I had my check engine light come on this morning. I checked the codes and had the 41 pop up (new). I shut the truck off for a while, restarted and the check engine light went away. Could this be the battery? I think its only 2-3 years old, could something else pop it up? I did use the battry to run a water sampling pump w/o it running and it started up just fine both times. Humm... is this of any concern? I guess I could get the battery and alt. checked, any other suggestions?

Message: My check ehgine light would come on as well, but after I let the truck sit for awhile and start it up the light would go off. It would run fine for few days then the light would come on again, shut the truck off light would go away then come back. It can't hurt to have the battery checked, most battery shops will do this for free and check the alt output at the same time.

Message: I have a 92 Dodge Dakota 4x4 automatic 5.2l v8. A
week ago i went to start it and nothing. The dash
lights come on and the fuel pump engages. But as
you proceed to turn over the the ignition switch,
nothing happens. No clicking or nothing.the
battery voltage is where it needs to be. I am at a
loss for ideas. I have checked the relays for the
starter and the fuel pump. When i checked the
codes I got 12 and 55. 55 is normal and 12 stands
for memory standby power lost. What does this mean
and how do i fix it.
Thank you
Jason Ruddy
