Subject: Dakotas in general IP: Logged
Message: Hi. I have a Jeep Cherokee which I like OK but it has some problems and am thinking about getting a dakota. (although it'll be awhile before I get a different vehicle) Do they have any general problems? I'd be looking at a 4x4 Quad Cab w/ a 4.7.

Message: I forgot to mention. I would be using it to tow a boat a lot (16') and would do a little drag racing and offroading.

I'd buy another kota.
01, 4.7, 5spd, LSD, quad cab, trailer towing, tire and handling, etc.
Original brakes, front and rear
original ball joints,
based on my mods, and peoples dynos who have the same, I'm putting out about 235+ rwhp
Fast, dependable, awesome truck, tows my 20ft sailboat real well.
I ordered mine the way I wanted it, and paid invoice for it.
I'm sure the Titan may be a nice truck too, dunno, isn't that a true full size?

Message: I wouldn't buy a nissan. But are there any problems that 4.7 dakotas have often? I haven't really heard anything bad on them so I'm trying to find out.

Message: XJ,
As far as the engine, earlier 4.7's it seems, a very few had sludging problems.
It's been discussed on this site ad nauseum.
Do a search on this site to find the links.
In a nutshell, it seems that, staying away form the jiffelube type places, using a quality full synthetic, and knowing that the 4.7 takes SIX quarts, you'll be fine.

Message: Thanks for telling me that. So synthetic oil only on the 4.7?
What about other parts of the truck. I saw a little mentioned about brakes. Do the rotors warp easily? I saw something else mentioned a few times, but dont' remember what it was.
