Message: I have a 99 dakota V-6 auto. With the cruise on, it seems as if the torque converter is going in and out of lock up at times, causing an anoying bumping sensation and corresponding increase in rpms. You can see the tach bouncing up and down. Some days it will do it constantly and others it won't do it at all. I was told it could be the throttle position sensor but then wouldn't it do that with the cruise off as well??

Message: It is the TPS for sure. Had it happen to me. Rpm all over the place feels like the Torque Converter is slipping but its not its the TPS. Go to the parts counter get a TPS for around $30 and install it your self its really easy just watch how the old one comes of. It should take you 5 min. It will be fixed. And yes mine did it with the cruis on and off.

Message: The TPS will be messing up at all times but it sends a signal to the computer which will vary its controls (air, timeing, etc.) but it will not vary your throttle setting since you are doing that with your foot. It will not cause a speed change or unock torque converter. When you turn on the cruise control the TPS is an input for it too and you will feel speed changes. When the cruise control calls for a big enough change in speed then the converter will unlock. One other thing can cause something similar. That is the speed sensor on the rearend but you will have other things happen when that fails.

Message: AHA!! Thanks guys; looks like I need one too, on my 5-speed. I knew I wasn't smokin' dope; it really IS creeping ahead and behind, and this explains why it's more noticeable when I cruise in 4th instead of 5th. Gotta love this board... -tk

Message: Yeah, the dealership guy I went to wanted $74. NAPA, AutoZone, Pep Boys don't carry it; NAPA told me it was dealership only. I'm holding off for a while now... -tk

Message: I had the same problem. After reading the posted messages I replaced the TPS. It fixed the problem. My truck had this problem for three months. I've taken it to every shop around with no luck. I was told nothing was wrong to it's the speed sensor. I replace the speed sensor. Of course it didn't fix the problem. Thanks a lot for the messages!

Message: jLo I hope your joking about having a torque converter in a manual tranny, but if your serious manuals don't have torque converters, the slippage between the motor and tranny is done by your clutch, I hope you don't think I'm trying to call you out, but if didn't know I would hope someone would tell me.

Message: my 2001 w/360 was doing the same thing Tim mentioned. I replaced the TPS with a $35 NAPA part (yes NAPA had it, compare to the $70 dealer item) and it fixed the problem. it took me 5 minutes to change.......it took the dealership 3 weeks to scratch their heads and lick their nuts with no results.

Message: The reason it can fail with no codes is that the SBEC only looks for a voltage at WOT and another voltage at idle. If there are dead spots, dirty contacts, etc over the sweep of the resistive surface, the SBEC won't see that at all.
Man does not live by codes alone.
