hey, I have a 1996 dakota sport, 3.9l 5speed and i cant find anything wrong. When i accelarate it spudders and runs like crap, like its not firing all cylinders.
I have replaced the Cap,rotor, wires, plugs, Idle airspeed control valve, had the heads redone, new intake, throttle body cleaned, new cat, new vaccum lines, new 02 sensors (before and after cat) has good fuel pressure, checked all the wiring for cracks or burnt spots, new air filter, new pcv valve, new timing gears and chain, the plugs are burning black in all cylinders and this means im running rich or ignition problems, pretty much covered everything i can think of. good compression, holds great oil pressure. dunno but if anyone has any ideas im All EARS.
thanks

I know this is going to sound kind of dumb, but how old is your fuel? I had a motorcycle with the same problem a couple of months ago, and it had only sat for 4-6 weeks, put in fresh gas and no more problem. Probably not your problem, but worth a shot maybe

The only codes it reads are misfires in cylinder 5, also it has a new coil, i forgot to mention that before. It has a full tank of 91 octane fuel maybe a week old.

hey, im still having problems with this, i replaced the fuel injectors thinking maybe one was sticking open and it didnt do anything.. When i start it, it is smoking real bad, it smells like unspent fuel real bad. the idle air control valve opens up wide open and it sounds like a huge vaccum leak but it settles down, runs fine for a few seconds. it will restart but takes forever and when it does it blows smoke from the tail pipe. the plugs are all black. and it uses a bunch of fuel. any suggestions? ive listed everything ive done above

Sounds exactly like the problem I had a couple of months ago. I did most of the replacement/maintenence you have done jharader. The final item that fixed my problem was a new PCM. I got the mopar pcm (online) because it was the same price as a new one from the dealer. The only code I ever got was misfire in number 7. I had no way of checking the pcm for correct operation, so I just bit the bullet and went out on a limb and paid for a new pcm and it works fine now.

97 cc 5.2L, cat back duals w/flowmaster 50, mopar PCM, 180T stat, k&n fipk, all MSD ignition

I am not sure if they make a mopar pcm for your vehicle, but remember this the computers are year specific another words a 98 computer will not work in a 97 dakota. I realize you have a 96 sport w/v6 so look at jegs.com or try v8performance.com for the mopar performance computer (if they are available) for v6, if you just want a stock replacement try carparts.com or searching the web. You can also try the junkyards in your area which may be cheaper. Just remember the year is specific and the tranny is specific when getting a replacement pcm.

1996 ECM is discontinued already? Geeze! I'm all for fuel injection, but if they're not going to support it with parts, are we really any better off than carbs?

Wrecker is your best bet for an ECM. Be forwarned, they offer no warranty on electronic parts, so once it's yours... IT'S YOURS!
