Message: searched for this and found that everyone with the abs and brake light on, and some with no low range speedo as well has changed their rear abs speed sensor. the one in the rear diff on a 2wd.
so i bought one from the dealer (for $40). I can't seem to find it in the factory service manual, so can you all tell me what i need to know about replacing it before i get under the truck?
what kind of tools, any lube, etc? hints? tips? I'm mechanically challenged but with help from this board i've changed my oil and did a full tune-up, so I'm gaining confidence and this looks like its gonna be easy enough, but never hurt to ask for help.
:)
thanks!

Message: Jeff,
I've never done this, but I had just bookmarked a thread yesterday. Its from the Dealer Recall board
Really long ABS & Brake light thread
Basically, the part of the thread that you're probably interested in is this (with notes):

Message:
just did rear abs sensor - problem solved, some hints for a 99 dak
- day before spray nut with wd40 or liquid wrench
- drive rear wheels up ramps (or steep driveway, helps keep diff fluid from leaking out, also chock wheels!)
- disconnect neg battery teminal
- top nut 13 MM use box wrench
- bottom nut 14 MM use box wrench
- press connect with thumb and pull connector off sensor
- wiggle sensor up, put screw driver under lip and wiggle to raise (carefully)
- dip finger in hole and put diff oil on new O ring on sensor
- push sensor in and bolt up (also, use dielectric grease for the wire connector)
- put ignition key in and turn to on position for 30 seconds
- reconnect battery
you're done

Note: Check the wrench sizes, I've seen that some people use 1/2" and 9/16" (which are close to 13mm and 14mm). Not sure if the nuts are metric or not.
Good Luck!

Message: there also is a diagnostic in that thread that i put in for the three different sensors that typically die.
Glad to see the info is being used. and the reason you put the key to the on position is to clear the trouble lite and reset the PCM.

Message: I'm gonna hate to have to redo all my custom stereo settings/levels/tweaks.
I don't suppose I could leave the battery plugged in and just unplug the pcm to reset it?
also, asked the dealer dude while i was there for the part how much they'd charge to install it. wouldn't give me a number till they looked at it (at least $37 just for a look-see of course). reminded me why I decided to do my own work on the truck!

Message: you can reset the trouble lite thru the computer hookup under the dash but ya gotta find someone willing to do it - autozone used to do it, but now they don't want to do it for legal reasons.

Message: jeff, you can reset the pcm without disconnecting the battery. stand outside the passenger fender and unplug the pcm connection nearest the firewall for about 15 seconds. you won't lose all your presets or anything.

Message: so I could leave the battery plugged in, and then use a code reader to reset the lights?
like with this OTC Stinger OBDII Code Reader? (at Pep Boys for $99)

Message: heh.
just replaced the sensor. piece of cake.
just in case anyone searches for this in the future i'll add my own tips now.
backed up onto my ramps for plenty of clearance.
used a small mirror to help see what i was doing (don't really need it but i was unsure of what i was looking at)
1/2" and 9/16" were perfect size tools.
also, i did not disconnect the battery, and when i started the truck after the swap, the lights were back to normal - didn't need to reset the pcm!
and once again, a ringing endorsement for all the friendly people at dodgedakotas.com for saving me at least $100-150 in dealer labor charges!
:)
