Subject: Brakes locking up? IP: Logged
Message: Just about a month ago my brakes locked up in a corner when I was doing about 40mph. Needless to say the truck just slid out of the apex, into a home owners barbwire fence and some of their bushes. The cops came and the mailed a ticket a week later stating that they measured my 20ft skid markes from asphault to dirt and said the I ws doing in excess of 55mph. I went to traffic school and gat that fixed, but now it has started raining alot here in norther AZ, and wheever my truck sits for about 2 hour or more in rainy weather, the brakes lock on me when I just barely touch the peddel. They will let off after about a second, but will do it each time I touch the peddel for about 3-6 trys, the they will start working normal. Any Ideas as to what may be wrong with the already insufficiant brakes? I dont want anymore accidents. At least not for a couple of years. LOL
Thanks again guys,
RAT

Message: Sounds like corrosion on the pads/shoes. Although it's pretty unusual for it to happen to all 4 corners at the same time.
Start by pulling them apart and using a little sand paper on the pads/shoes and the rotors/drums. I suspect, though, that this will not work.
Check the condition of the fluid. If it looks nasty, you could have water induced corrosion in the MC or the distribution block.

Message: I have a 1998 2wd 2.5L. Reg cab. Does not look like corrosion on pads at all, and I don't think that my back tires are locking up, just my front. No codes triped so far, but I think I will change my fluid, cause it is getting pretty dirty, but I still don't understand why it does it mainly when it rains? As far as I know there is only ABS on the rear, but I could be wrong. However, any time I really lay on my brakes, (even with slightly larger aftermarket tires) one of the front will inevitably lock up on me.
Never have cared much for the braking on the Dakotas, but I remember hearing somting about a 4 wheel disc conversion. Any info on the would be cool too.
