Subject: rockers hitting valve covers? IP: Logged
Message: I'll be installing 1.7 roller rockers and wanted to find out if anyone has had problems with the rockers hitting the stock valve covers on the 5.2L? I think I read somewhere that I can just grind down the insides of them? I see that krcperformance sells new valve covers but they're kind of expensive. I also checked truckperformance.com and their price is better, but I'm not sure I actually need to buy them or not. Does anyone have an idea, or have a set of covers they've purchased (for a decent price) that worked out well?
Thanks!
Mark

Message: i have heard some people talking about just hammering the baffles down some.. just don't remove them, the pcv will suck a LOT of oil out of the valve covers....

Message: to be safe, knock the baffles in 1/2" just use a block of wood to
fit inside the cover and hammer it, or you could buy replacement
covers with custom welded baffles from sam at socaldakota.com
that's what i wound up doing when i did mine

Message: Thanks for the responses. I checked socaldakota.com and couldn't find the valve covers listed there. I might have to give him a call. If they're reasonably priced, I'd much rather get a new set than have to mess with the precise adjustment of a hammer and block of wood. ;)
I haven't looked inside the valve cover yet, so I don't understand the issue about the PCV pulling oil out of the valve covers? I understand the issue about vacuum and such along with the unspent gasses, but how would it pull oil?
Thanks again,
Mark

Message: well if there is no baffle on the underside of the pcv it will suck all the oil out of your engine (eventually) and pour it down the intake
some people over react and remove the baffle completely, that's a no no

Message: The PCV valve is sucking on the inside of the engine to get rid of blow-by and unburned gasses, if oil passes by it,,, like having no baffle for the PCV valve ,,, it gets sucked into the intake. The baffle provides a place for suspended oil in the internal engine air to slow down and get trapped on the baffle elements, which then drain down the baffle and back into the engine.
No baffle and any suspended oil in the engine's internal air will get sucked out by the PCV valve.
I had a set of MT cast aluminum valve covers without baffles and the PCV would suck oil like crazy. I fabed up a make-shift baffle which reduce the oil the PCV sucked up, but didn't get rid of the oil consumption completely. If I took off the PCV hose it would have oil inside the hose. The PCV would only suck 1/4 quart of oil every 3-4K after the homegrown baffle so I didn't bother trying to figure out a better baffle design
Keep the baffles!

Message: I think Sam runs a core exchange program on his valve covers. Give him a shout and he'll help you out. You can get them powdercoated to to help dress up your engine, if you are so inclined.

Message: Hey-- yeah, the valve covers aren't up on the page yet.
I'm doing the website, as well as everything else myself... In the process of moving to a shop, etc. etc.
I have the valve covers available, need about a week to get them powdercoated (just let me know the color you want) as they are sand blasted already.
Email me for pricing, info, colors, etc.

Message: Sam, you've got mail. :)
I just thought I'd state here as well that I'm looking for a cheaper set of covers that don't look cheap :). All I require is that they're going to work with 1.7 rockers. Anything in chrome or black would be a bonus.
Thanks,
Mark
