Subject: help steering sucks! IP: Logged
Message: I have a 4.7L 01 club cab 4wd with 77K and it is experiencing steering problems. The symtom is an irregular feel in the steering wheel. When I turn I feel a resistance in the steering and then the wheel turns quickly and the result is a pretty choppy turn. It seems to happen at the same steering wheel location each time and it happens in both directions. This is the really confusing thing though, when the truck is just sitting there idleing I can turn the wheel until I feel the resistance and then try to hold it steady and the steering breaks into oscillation. I have checked the linkage before and after the hydralics and it all looks good and I have replaced the power steering fluid with fresh. I flushed the system and the old stuff looked pretty bad. It is brown in comparison to the new stuff which is clear. The power steering pump seems to be fine it doesn't make any noise, this leads me to believe that I am looking at a new rack and pinion. Does anyone have any suggestions for my problem or similar experiences. Thanks

Message: Hey you say your truck has 4wd, is it IN 4wd?? When engaged in 4wd rough turning like you are explaining is expected. Hope this helped.

Message: You might try some Power steering "conditioner "
to see if it helps !
But , in the end result ' Yes ' sounds like
you will have to get a new Rack and Pinion !!

Message: Thanks for your advice guys. I have been having trouble with it for over a month and it is definitely not in 4wd. I will try the power steering conditioner and see it that helps. I drove it over 500 mile this past weekend on the interstate and it seems a little better now, maybe I am just getting used to it.

Message: Don't go pouring all sorts of shlt in the PS fluid.
Try getting new tires. How many miles on the set on there? I was having problems with my steering and the so-called brain trust on this board all said my balljoints were bad and I needed a new steering rack and I needed new bushings and I needed new tie rod ends and blah blah blah ad infinitum.
I took it to a real expert and it turned out to be the tires. Everything else was fine.

Message: Helper makes a good point. It's very difficult to diagnose the problem without crawling uder the truck and looking around. Get the front end up in the air and start checking things out. Once you do that, the problem is often easy to find.
Find the problem before changing any parts.

Message: I have had the truck up on jack stands on many occasions and checked out all the linkage and the ball joints are tight and the steering is tight. It is definitely not tires or any rotating element because the problem exists when the truck is not rolling.
