Subject: Dodge color? IP: Logged
Message: I know Ford Blue, but is there a color that people associate with Dodge? I am going to be making a repair to my intake manifold (leaking plenum pan) and was considering priming and painting it, but I haven't decided upon a color yet. It's pretty nasty as it sits. Do I just clean, prime and paint it? Any tips?
Thanks!

Message: From my engine rebuilding days, I always thought it was:
o Ford Blue ("regular" blue)
o Chevy Orange
o Mopar Blue (light blue, close to sky blue, but not quite blue-me :-)

Message: Lurkin,
The Mopar Blue you're thinking of is "Corporate Blue" aka "Petty Blue." I think of Hemi Organge when I think of old Dodges, and that new maroonish red for new Dodges.

Message: Depending on what body and engine , they had different colors. I also always think of the Hemi Orange. But your could always go with some of the other Mopar, colors, like "Sublime", or "Plum Crazy".
I painted the intake manifold on my 2.5L, to make it look a whole lot cleaner. I used the Aluminum, Manifold High Head paint by Duplicolor i think. Stands up to like 1500 degrees, and when it cures it looks cool. I took my manifold off, and used some Aircraft remover, along with a few wire brushes to clean it up. Your can get the Aircraft remover at Checkers, or Autozone. Wear glove though, cause it pretty nasty stuff.
I used to work for a painting crew that painted houses. And although they don't have much in common with autos, I did learn one thing. It's all in the prep work. Most of the time the engine block and heads are painted orange, and covers, and manifolds are chromed, or black. But being original is good too.
Did not prime mine, but as far as I know you don't need primer, when your using engine enamels, or header paints. The probably wont take heat well anyways. Just light even multiple coats.

Message: I was just thinking of using some lacquer thinner or maybe some carb cleaner to clean the junk off my intake manifold. I had asked the local parts guy about priming and he said I didn't need to. After reading the can of engine paint I can imagine it's because the stuff must cure to a varnish-like glaze once heated. I'd guess the primer would only get in the way. ;)
Thanks for the responses all. Mopar had some funky colors, so I guess there really isn't *one* color associated with them. More of a feeling. :)
