Subject: Change Fuel Filter? IP: Logged
Message: I'm getting my truck (V8 4.7 Dakota) worked on for an engine light and I'm wondering if I should have the fuel filter replaced. I have 52,000 miles, never changed it. Is it neccessary? Seems to be running fine, but someone told me I should maybe get it changed. What do you think? Any advice would be great.

Message: the fuel filter is found in the fuel pump assembly in the gas tank. Its an expensive unit to fix/replace. Unless you really need to I would not do it. You need to drop the gas tank, wrestle the fuel pump assembly out and not break any lines coming and going. the pump, from what I have read on this site can be very, very expensive.
but that is just my 2 cents

Message: I believe that the fuel filter is in the tank wich is not easy to replace, you may want to check into that but i have a 2000 quad cab with the 3.9 and mine is in the tank, like i said you may want to check into that

Message: after reading the owner's manual it states that the fuel filter should be changed around 1000 or so, so if you are getting work done on it anyways you might want to get it changed just to be on the safe side.

Message: Interesting. I looked through my book and couldnt find anything on changing the fuel filter. If it's 100,000 miles, I'm not going to worry about it because I'm only at 50,000.

Message: yeah, if there is going to be work done on it any way, now is the time to do it. But if you just want to change the filter, get ready to open your wallet.
