I see a lot of transfer case questions posted. I can tell you this much. I recently sold my 179,000 mile 95 Cherokee. When you put it in 4x4 that transfer case grumbled and growled like you wouldn't believe, and that was from day one! However, at 179,000 it still worked fine.
Admittedly, my 03, full time 4x4 QC transfer case is as quiet as a church mouse!

My 93 Dakota 4x4 with 163,000 miles is perfectly quiet. Just from listening, I can't tell the difference between 2WD and 4WD.

Um 93Dak, I think he meant noises that occur when engaging/disengaging 4wd. But who knows..
