Message: I just got my 2004 SXT. I ordered it from the factory so it wasn't sitting on a dealers lot or anything yet there is a considerable amount of rust underneath. It is on the drivetrain, stabilizer bar, muffler etc... Why is this? Neither the dealer or dodge will give me a straight answer on this.Any ideas?

Message: Well any thing thats not painted will rust, if its just surface rust it's perfectly normal. But do one thing get it undercoated, and do it every year this isnt a once and your done thing. Lots of new cars that have a million more miles on then are rotten because people don't know or are too cheap and lazy to do it.
It also does more then just stop rust, it helps lube bushings and leafsprings to prevent squeeking, protects fuel and Brake lines, electrical connections......
Everyone should be undercoating their vehicles.

Message: i dont undercoat anything. for example, i have 2 lil red express trucks, 1 was undercoated from factory, and 1 was not. the one that was undercoated retained water and created rust bubbles underneath in the frame. the non coated frame looks like new. thats just my opinion...

Message: I have mixed feelings on undercoating. I had a 1986 Plymouth Reliant wagon and a 1988 Plymouth Reliant wagon. The 88 was undercoated by Ziebart when it was nearly new. The 86 was never undercoated. The floor pan under the driver's feet rusted out on both cars when they were 12 years old.
I think that undercoat helps protect against corrosion due to road salt, but I think that it can hold moisture against the car. It can also gum up parking brake lines.

Message: If applied improperly (as Rusty Jones and Ziebart sometimes did), it can plug up the drain holes and rust out the fenders.
My brother sold me his 92 Dak from FL this winter. Not a spot of rust. Up here in the northeast, road salt eats up the cars. That's the difference. Skip the undercoating, just hose off the bottom when washing the car to get the salt off. Surface rust won't catch up with you in the life of the vehicle. If you're still worried, oil the underside.

Message: If oiling the underside, use transmission fluid. Regular oil softens rubber parts.
