Subject: AC only works on high - help!!!
IP: Logged

Message:
Hey all-

I just drove my truck today for the first time after a week of it sitting. Before I left my house I started the truck up and turned the AC on to the level before the max setting. I then let the truck run for a few minutes before I left. Anyways as soon as I pulled out of my driveway the AC stopped working. Come to fine out it only works on the highest setting.

With this being said I did a search on this site which showed an old post from someone experiencing the same problem. The responses to the post all mention the "blower motor resistor" as being the problem. Now when I search for this part on Napa's, Carquest's, Autozone's, etc... website there is no mention of this part for an '01 QC 4x4.

Does this part even exist for my year truck? Any other ideas of what the problem may be?

Sorry about the long winded post...

LOOKS like you are in for an expensive repair !
seems like an electronic control !?
For 1995 it was only a " ballast resistor "
about $ 20.00 from dealer

You need a blower motor resistor. go to your local dodge dealer and get one. they will know exactly what it is. Its located under the passenger side dash, if you look up and see where a wire harness is connected thats the part, its held in by two screws. I had to put one in my 02 qc last month and it cost me like 8 bucks for the part.

Going by that site - it seems that sometime
in 2001 Chryco switched to Electronic control !
You might be lucky enough to have an early
2001 with the simple resistor !!

Thanks for the info!

I haven't had the chance to call the dealership yet, but I did check at the local NAPA store and they had no clue.

Thanks again,

Scott

A lot of '01 Dakotas have had defective blower resistors. I had to replace mine in November '03. I have an '01 CC. The part # is 4885635-AC and I paid the dealer $9.90. Probably the cheapest part in his inventory!!!

I was driving my '01 down the road yesterday on a balmy 97-deg. Houston day and the blower motor cut out just as others on this post described. The replacement part number was 4885635-AA, it's clearly a more robustly designed resistor than the original part. Thanks to all for the information in this forum. One tip I have is that the resistor is more easily accessed if you first loosen the floor vent, then you can easily get a 5/16" nut driver onto the fasteners retaining the resistor. The screws retaining the floor vent are even the same head size.

As a sidenote, ever since I purchased this vehicle I was never satisfied that the blower produced an adequate air flow - there was no clear differentiation between the third and fourth speed settings on the fan. After replacing the resistor, there clearly was an increase in airflow. If you feel you're not getting adequate airflow it may be a leading indicator of a faulty resistor.

Thanks jb !!!

You just saved me a boat load of money not having the dealership fix my AC issue. The part cost me $10.60 and took me 5 mintues to replace. AC works fine again... I will be using this site more often for my DAKOTA issues...

Thanks again...

kevin

where is the heater control resistor module located in my 2004 dakota quad cab 4x4? My fan only blows on high so I suspect the resistor module bad.

Yeah... It is on the passenger side floor board. Right next to the blower. A five wire harness plugs into it.
