Subject: Dakota brakes IP: Logged
Message: My '88 V6 has had persistent brake problems. Normal braking seems to work fine, although the pedal goes quite low. On panic stops the pedal seems to bind and it takes a good second or two for the brakes to actually engage. I've also had bleed-by (pedal slowly goes to floor under steady pressure).
I replaced the calipers and wheel cylinders a couple of years ago, and replaced the master cyl. & booster last year, with no improvement. Decided the master cyl was bad and got a replacement, which improved things a bit but not completely. Finally bought a brand new (not rebuilt) master cyl, but it's no better. Any ideas??
One thing I noticed when bench bleeding the master cyls is that I get a steady stream of fluid from the rear port throughout the stroke, but the front port only squirts fluid for about the first third of the stroke - after that nothing comes out. Since all 3 master cyls were like this I assume it's designed that way, but does any one know why?
Lastly, any bleeding tips? I've been bleeding the load sensing valve first, followed by the furthest rear brake and then working up to the nearest front, with the engine running the whole time to maintain vacuum.
Thanks,
-Dave
