Subject: V8 Engine Swap IP: Logged
Message: I have a 97 Dak with a 2.5 in it. I love the truck just want more power so im gonna put a 318 in her. I want to run the stock 5-speed behind the 8 cylinder. Can anyone tell me where I might be able to find a bellhousing that bolts up the the motor and the tranny. I am trying to make this swap as painless as possible. Also as far as i can find out the tranny that is in the truck is an AX15. Does anyone know of any different transmissions used behind the second gen 2.5ltr trucks? Thanx for the info and help in advance

Message: is the NV-3500 HD the one that comes stock with the 5.2 and 5.9 V8's? I too am interested in upgrading to a 5.9l but want to use the AX15 since its what I got right now (and since I am a budget minded hot-rodder I must think of the cost). Now if I drive normally, and only chirp the tires occasionally and only downshift on the rare occasion that I need to teach a tuner a lesson about cruzin' etiquette, the AX15 should last long enough so I can save my pennies for a better transmission - right?

Message: The 5.9 never got a 5 speed in a dak, or a 1500 ram for that matter. You would have to get a 2500 with the nv4500hd to get a 360 5 speed truck from the factory. Btw MF69 you are not driving a gen2, it is a gen 3, and no the only tranny behind the 4 popper is the ax-15, most v6's had the aqx-15 too, but some lucky people got the nv3500.

Message: that is interesting. So not all 2500's are diesel? I have been doing a search for them, but all I find are Cummins engines. So, Kinda, how would a guy know if their Dak has the mv3500 then? Is there a place on the tranny that will tell me? I dont think I would (luck doesnt work that way) but I need to be sure.

Message: Actually, Mopar considers Dakotas through 1996 to be Gen1's, '97 up are Gen2's. In the real world, we consider them to be of 3 generations.

Message: You could have got a NV4500 HD with the ole reliable 360 but it had to be orderd.
Also the 300 lbs of toruqe would eat your AX-15 up for lunch.
Really I don't think the Flywheel would fit.
The NV-3500 was for the 239 cid V6 while the HD verson was for the 318 V8 including the newer 287 or 4.7 liter.
The 4500 series was for the 360 and 488 V10 Engines.
Before the HI-out put Cummins was bought out to the market, The 4500 was also mated to the 460 modle the was replaced my the 5600 HD.

Message: so let me get this straight:
the AX15 wont cut it with a 5.9l, even if it fits (of course if I dont drive like a maniac it should last for a while - right?). There are other ones to choose from such as the NV-3500 or 4500.
I guess I am going to have to do some real thinking / and research. hmmm
