Subject: What to do about smoking!!(BERND) IP: Logged
Message: I have an 87 4x4 3.9V6 Dakota with 149,000 miles on it. It is burning oil and smokes when I accelerate. I have tried some ring sealer (real thick brown, syrup looking oil additive) but I don't believe it helped much. What should I do, get the engine rebuilt, new engine, new truck (yeah right, not enough funds for that) or is there something good, cheap, and easy that I can do myself? On the previous oil change I used some motor flush (I asked y'all about that when I used it), would this have caused a problem? Should I try Slick 50, will it help any??

Message: First thing I would do is check my valve stem seals. Do a compression check.... that will tell you what condition the rings are in...

Message: Yes flushing your engine can be a bad thing on a engine with alot of miles on it,you might think it would help but it just does the opposite the deposits were helping you get a better ring seal and do NOT use slick fifty it will make it even worse, that stuff is crap!!!!!!!! There is nothing in a can that will fix blowby all you can do is use 20-50 weight oil and no synthetic either.Rebuild or new its up to you.My opinion rebuilding is better a seasoned block is better than a new one and you can do changes at a more cost effective price when you start from scratch, hope it works out for you
