Subject: '01 4.7 transmission question IP: Logged
Message: I just got this truck a month ago, and I've noticed that when I roll in gear or have the clutch disengaged and the transmission in neutral, I hear a kind of grindy scratchy noise. Also, when I shift into 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gears I sometimes hear kind of a "grr" noise. I don't know anything about transmissions or engines or anything, and I was wondering if someone could tell me if this is something worth checking into. There's no warranty or antyhign on my truck, so if I do get it serviced, it will come out of my pocket. I just wanna make sure I'm not just being paranoid. Thanks.

Message: rachel,
Sounds like it may be the tranny, but then again, maybe not. Could very well be the tranny as you suspect.
Other things to look for, that Could cause something like you describe are:
U joits-not as likely
wheel bearing-even less likely
Not to be an a$$, make sure the clutch is all the way to the floor when engaging-I'm sure you probably do
I'd start by changing the tranny fluid, with the right kind, or even a synthetic. Hopefully, you, or a friend can do it, and pay attention of what comes out in the way of metal shavings.
Good luck, keep us posted
Todd
