Subject: Q about Ex. Man. Bolts IP: Logged
Message: Ok guys, how bad is this problem with the '99 3.9 engine as far as bolt breaking off for no reason. Also, how difficult is it to replace the bolts with stronger ones if they are still intacked.

Message: THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THE 3.9. I READ SOMEWHERE ON THIS SITE THAT THE BOLTS WERE NOT HARDENED THE RIGHT WAY AND GET BRITTLE AND BRAKE. MY ADVICE IS IF ONE DID IT MORE WILL. IT IS ALOT EASIER TO REMOVE THEM IF THERE IS SOMETHING TO GRAB ONTO. MY MECHANIC QUOTED ME 2.5 HRS FOR LABOR AND SPENT 7-8 TO DO MINE WITH 3 BROKE. HE REMOVED THE MANIFOLDS EXTRACTED THE BROKEN BOLTS INSTALLED NEW GASKETS AND BOLTS. IT COST ABOUT $250. I LET MINE GO TOO FAR. IT WAS MESSING WITH THE O2 SENSOR AND MADE THE TRUCK RUN RICH TO THE POINT AT A LIGHT IT WOULD FLOOD OUT AND STALL. GAS MILEAGE WENT TO CRAP. AND RUINED THE O2 SENSOR. SO DO IT NOW.

Message: I bought my '98 3.9 in March '03 and had the same problem with the left manifold. Then the mechanic tells me that the other side was done not too long before this one. She's been running not bad since then, but I am planning on getting a set of JBA headers and new hardware before the summer's out.
Also...when my bolts were broke, air was getting sucked in at the manifold which told the O2 sensor to dump more fuel. My cat was toast and I also replaced the upstream O2 sensor.
Better to jump on that as soon as you can.
